This Issue's Thought: Supporting Impactful small nonprofits

Historically, smaller nonprofits have struggled to attract the large-scale donations that more prominent, well-connected organizations typically receive. However, this trend seems to be shifting, especially in light of MacKenzie Scott’s transformative contributions, totaling nearly $20 billion to over two thousand nonprofits since 2020. While it is often easier to conduct due diligence with larger, established organizations—where trust in their capacity to manage funds is more assured—small nonprofits can deliver equally significant impact if given the chance. Though concerns may arise over their ability to handle new funding effectively, their missions and potential to drive change warrant taking that risk.

Many nonprofits operate with ambitious plans but lack the necessary resources to bring them to fruition. To truly elevate their impact, they often need more than just financial support; mentoring, capacity building, and other resources are essential to help them scale. However, these developmental needs can only be addressed once adequate funding is secured, making financial support the first and most critical step in empowering smaller organizations to realize their full potential.
