Consuming Cuteness

Our talented designer Yoojin Park shares her thoughts on the viral Jellycat 'Fish and Chip Shop' and how and why we enjoy consuming cuteness.

On a recent trip to Selfridges with my sister, we visited the Jellycat fish & chips store. For those who might not be aware, Jellycat is a brand of cuddly toys, and in addition to the standard designs of animals, they have toys modelled after food and other objects. In certain cities they hold pop-up events; in London they have the fish & chip shop, in New York they have a diner, and in Paris a patisserie. And instead of food they sell adorable soft recreations, with staff handling cuddly “fried” fish with tongs and wrapping them in newspaper to be passed to delighted shoppers.

Selfridges was mostly quite empty, except around the Jellycats. And despite being soft toys it was mostly adults buying them.

Jellycats aren’t the only cute craze to have taken off with adults. Another example is Skullpanda, a Chinese brand with an aesthetic that blends cuteness with an edgy vibe to attract young consumers. And it’s working, with the company generating an increase of 90% year-on-year for 2024. Often sold in blind boxes – meaning you don’t know what you’re going to get – unboxing videos became very popular on Chinese social media. Read more
