Update on my recent posts on the Oliver McGowan mandatory training on learning disability and autism:
Health Education England recently confirmed that the National Autistic Society and Gloucester Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust are the new delivery partners. However, from my own experience, having been involved in the project for the past 3 years, the full rollout will still take some time.
The Health and Care Act, 2022 requires settings to provide training for their staff in learning disability and autism, including how to interact appropriately with autistic people and people who have a learning disability. This should be at a level appropriate to their role.
Whilst Oliver’s training is the preferred method, the only specific requirements are:
- training should be structured to use the two Core Capabilities (Learning Disability and Autism) Frameworks and include interactive learning where the learner can consider how to apply their learning in their specific role;
- the training should include input from people with lived experience, ideally by being delivered by people who are autistic and / or have a learning disability;
Just to confirm my own position:
This time next week I will be attending the first of 2 days' Tier 2 Facilitator?Training (23rd/24th) and by end of January 2024 , I should have completed? ? the Tier 2 Experts by Experience Training. This will mean that I can deliver the OMMT Tier 2 in either role. I'm hoping that by early spring, I can also complete the Lead Facilitator Training so that I can train others to deliver the Tier 2 . Busy times for me ahead!

This is why people need to top up with #NATPmentalhealth if they work in mental health or youth justice services- ;) https://www.hee.nhs.uk/our-work/autism/national-autism-trainer-programme
