The Latest Social Buzzz
This edition of Social Buzz has our social media manager Tracey reminiscing about a bird we all used to know.
?
To paraphrase John Cleese: “Look, matey, I know a dead bird when I see one, and I'm looking at one right now”.
?
If you’re someone who has been working in social media marketing since the early days, like me, you’ll remember Twitter as a land of opportunity. A place to get your brand’s name and hashtag trending for days at a time. A place to build community through virtual events and parties and an affordable platform to run ads.
?
It almost seems like a lifetime ago. So, what’s next for the platform formerly known as Twitter and its controversial “dark Maga” owner Elon Musk??
?
For one thing, they are in dire straits financially having lost nearly 80% of its estimated value in the 2 years since Musk took over. That’s about 10 billion dollars, by the way. Social media managers, think of the numbers you could pull off with that kind of add spend!
?
So, how are they trying to lure users back to the platform?
?
?
These changes feel tailored for a certain kind of user…and certainly not one who is looking for a safe platform to build community or spend advertising dollars.
?
And now, in their latest release, X is rolling out “RADAR” a “real-time analysis tool” which will allow users to spot emerging trends as they happen. Sounds exciting, right? Until you hear that it’s not available to anyone but Premium+ paid users. And until you remember that this functionality already existed for years and was known as “Insights”.?
?
Don’t, as they say, pee on my leg and tell me it’s raining. I’m a social media manager, I already have enough problems, I have to deal with Meta Business Suite every single day.?
?
So, what do you think? Can X be salvaged or has this bird “ceased to be”?
