The Lewy Body Soldier
By Norman Mc Namara
As a caregiver for my 93 year old mother with Dementia, the first important thing I learned in my research was that no two people with Dementia are alike, even when diagnosed with the same type. In this book I enjoyed discovering the determination of a brave man heavily armed for a Dementia battle that he’d never trained for. In the daily heat of war he develops useful strategies to equip himself as well as others while gathering an army who’s fighting alongside of him. (The Purple Angels) But yet beneath his solid armor there’s a common, vulnerable person who can barely find peace at the end of the day.
This practical book filled with triumph and tragedy does remind me of a deeply personal diary kept by a soldier at war. It’s pages bear uninhibited advice from an instruction manual, to raw stories of brutal mental anguish but also told through insightful poetry. Thankfully there’s pages of victory and lighthearted humor. In whole it’s a surprising array of events starting with one man’s dementia diagnosis that leaves you amazed to grasp the reality of how far his life has taken him globally in such a short time, and he’s still going.
As an artist turned dementia awareness advocate this book has inspired me to create posters from some of it’s best ideas. And having been a hospice music therapist I was happy to know that all the proceeds of this book go towards purchasing MP3 players for people with Dementia. Setting up my Mother’s music everyday is a favorite pastime for her. ~ Daisy E. Vest
