Latest report: Oregon lacks 78,000 homes

The U.S. faces a housing underproduction deficit of 3.85 million homes, according to the latest report from Up for Growth .

Underproduction in Oregon and Washington:

The report pegs Oregon's underproduction at 78,000 units and Washington State at 138,000 units.

While the West has seen marginal improvements since the 2023 report, the situation has worsened in the middle of the country.

Addressing the Crisis:

The report states that addressing the ongoing housing underproduction crisis in the U.S. will require concerted efforts at all levels of government. Regulations and policies that promote innovative solutions are needed to ensure every American has access to safe and affordable housing.

Potential solutions:

  • Policy Reforms: Encourage state and local governments to eliminate exclusionary zoning practices and update land use regulations to allow for diverse housing types, including middle housing and accessory dwelling units (ADUs).
  • Incentives for Developers: Implement density bonuses and tax abatements to promote affordable housing development.
  • Streamlined Approval Processes: Shorten and clarify the timeline for community and planning reviews to expedite housing projects.
  • Federal Support: Propose actions such as reducing tariffs on building materials, facilitating the faster disposition of federal land for housing development, and aligning federal funding with housing production goals.
  • Innovation in Housing Construction: Support the use of manufactured and modular housing technologies to reduce costs and deliver affordable homes.
