Here is a bumper issue of the newsletter to cover October and November.

The first big news to hit us in October was the Autumn Budget. We have been learning more about what is in store, despite Rachel Reeves being labelled by some as the 'green councillor', climate was not mentioned in her speech. To summarise, here are a few key points to takeaway:

?? Fiscal Rules: New rules allowing increased government investment aimed at transforming the UK into a "clean-energy superpower."

??Fuel Duty Freeze: The 14-year freeze on fuel duty continues, despite its significant cost to the Treasury and its impact on carbon emissions.

??Tax Changes: Taxes on private jets will increase, while incentives for electric vehicles are extended, including support for charging infrastructure.

??Clean Energy Investment: Significant funding is allocated for carbon capture, nuclear energy, and green hydrogen, with plans for a national wealth fund to attract private investment.

??Windfall Tax Increase: The windfall tax on oil and gas companies rises to 38%, with a focus on adjusting future taxation in response to price shocks.

??Other Initiatives: Investments include £3.4 billion for energy efficiency, £5 billion for sustainable agriculture, and funding for tree planting and peatland restoration. The budget aims to address economic challenges while promoting sustainable growth and reducing emissions.

There has been further research showing the worrying effects of air pollution for children's health. It has been linked to brain changes, reducing white matter volume resulting in poor brain development. IT is also now thought that exposure to air pollution could cause peanut allergies in children.

Those who use open fires and log burners this winter are being warned that burning general waste on the fire can cause toxic fumes and to be careful what they put on.

A ground-breaking study has been launched to investigate further air pollution and dementia, whilst another has just published results that found air pollution may increase the risk of heart failure readmission for patients with unstable angina.

Meanwhile, residents of Surrey Mole Valley will get a new alert system to help vulnerable people plan ahead and reduce their exposure to air pollution.

November

Research has found that exposure to long term air pollution is linked to increased risk of acute kidney injury and mortality. A study in New York has found prolonged exposure to ultra fine particles significantly increases overall mortality risk, particularly among marginalised communities.

Lahore, Pakistan and Delhi, India have both topped the news channels with the dangerously air pollution levels currently impacting everyday life in these areas.

For those with furry friends, a study by Grantham Research Institute has found improving air quality could prevent over 80,000 veterinary visits in the UK each year, with cats and dogs most at risk.

If you're 1 in 10 people in the UK who have eczema then it could be because of air pollution. Research by Yale School of Medicine in the USA has found for every 10 micrograms per cubic meter rise in PM2.5, eczema rates more than doubled.
