Earlier in the day, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that it had detected two drones approaching Eilat from the east. The IDF then intercepted the drones through the weapon systems on naval vessels, and one of the drones was successfully intercepted. However, the one that was not shot down fell into Eilat Port. Ambulance service department in Magen David Adom said that a 68-year-old and a 28-year-old civilian were injured in the drone attack on the port. Another video showed that the drone, which was loaded with explosives, exploded when it hit Eilat, and then thick smoke billowed in the port area, and a warehouse was damaged.

Eilat Port has been attacked many times since the outbreak of a new round of Israeli-Palestinian conflict in October 2023. In the early morning of April 1, the Iraqi militia, Islamic Resistance Organization, issued a statement saying that they have hit a hostile target in the southern Israeli city of Eilat. According to relevant reports, the alarm sounded loudly and at least four explosions were heard in succession.

On April 25, a spokesman for the Yemeni Houthi armed forces claimed that the organization attacked a cargo ship named Mediterranean Darwin in the Gulf of Aden and launched several ballistic missiles and cruise missiles at the Israeli Red Sea city of Eilat.

Affected by the attack, a large number of shipping companies changed the routes of their ships and no longer docked at Eilat Port. The port is facing serious financial problems and its operations have come to a standstill. Its main businesses of vehicle import and potash fertilizer export have also been greatly impacted. Data shows that in 2023, a total of 149,000 vehicles were imported from Eilat Port, but since 2024, this number has dropped to 0, and half of the workers at the port could lose their jobs. What’s more, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has almost brought the Red Sea, a key waterway between Asia and Europe, to a standstill. Many shipping companies have announced that they will stop sailing and take detours. The tense situation has brought about a series of chain reactions on international shipping.

In this regard, the international community generally calls on all parties to exercise restraint and resolve differences through peaceful negotiations and diplomatic means to avoid more casualties and property losses as well as maintain regional peace and stability.
