Telia’s zero-waste journey with TXO

Telia has achieved a significant milestone by modernizing its mobile network, becoming the first in Norway to establish a nationwide 5G network. This upgrade involved replacing equipment across all base stations, with the old components being sent for reuse or recycling. So far, nearly 2,000 parts have found new life in 35 different countries, showcasing Telia’s commitment to sustainability.

Over recent years, Telia has upgraded thousands of base stations, equipping them with advanced technology to deliver superior 5G and enhanced 4G capabilities. Customers across Norway now benefit from faster speeds, broader coverage, and a reliable mobile network. However, the modernization process raised an important question: what happens to the outdated equipment, such as cabinets, antennas, and circuit boards?

Camilla Watz Johannessen, Telia Norway’s Head of Sustainability, highlights the company’s commitment to eco-friendly practices during its 5G upgrade. To achieve its zero-waste target by 2030, Telia prioritized reuse and recycling, collaborating with TXO in Sweden to responsibly manage decommissioned equipment. Kelsie Raynes, TXO’s Key Account Director, commends Telia for setting a benchmark in the industry by reusing existing assets, purchasing refurbished products, and minimizing waste while maintaining network efficiency. Telia’s innovative and sustainable strategy serves as a blueprint for the telecom sector, demonstrating how environmental responsibility can align with business success and inspire broader adoption of green solutions.

Telia sent 12,805 used parts to TXO, its reuse and recycling partner. TXO’s innovative “i-JUDGE” system assesses whether equipment can be resold, reused, or recycled. Of the 70 tons of materials processed, Telia reused 622 parts in its own network, resold 1,723 parts, and recycled over 8,000. These parts now support networks in 35 countries, demonstrating the global impact of Telia’s efforts.

Exigence consortium aims to reduce Telecoms’ carbon footprint

A new EU-backed initiative, the Exigence consortium, has been formed to address the environmental impact of next-generation telecommunications infrastructure. Comprising ten organisations, including industry leaders like Telefónica and Huawei, the project aims to reduce carbon emissions and minimise the ecological footprint of 6G systems. By measuring energy consumption, optimising service delivery, and encouraging behavioral changes among ICT users, the consortium seeks to create a more sustainable telecom ecosystem.

Artur Hecker, Director at Future Network Technologies at Huawei, highlighted the distinct strategy of Exigence, noting that conventional optimisation techniques are still important, but what makes this initiative unique is its focus on engaging end-users directly in efforts to lower carbon emissions. The consortium plans to develop an integrated platform that offers actionable insights and solutions for greener mobile technology usage. This initiative aligns with the EU’s Green Deal, highlighting the importance of sustainability in achieving broader environmental goals.

Exigence will take a holistic approach, considering the entire ICT ecosystem rather than focusing on isolated components. Coordinated by F6S, a global network supporting innovation and research, the project also includes partners such as the Instituto de Telecomunica??es, the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research, and Atos IT Solutions. By bringing together diverse expertise, Exigence aims to set new standards for sustainability in the telecom industry, paving the way for a greener future in 6G and beyond.

Alchemy’s Callisto platform drives record growth

Alchemy’s innovative trading platform, Callisto, has achieved remarkable success by connecting over 3,000 wholesale buyers and sellers worldwide. Designed to simplify the buying and selling of secondary tech, Callisto offers a diverse range of products, including smartphones, laptops, tablets, and accessories. Its dynamic pricing and interactive features, such as the ‘Make an Offer’ option, enable buyers to negotiate deals efficiently, fostering a seamless and transparent trading experience.

The platform plays a vital role for buyers, including wholesalers, resellers, and e-commerce stores, by providing access to high-quality refurbished tech while minimising supply chain challenges and reducing costs. For sellers, such as retailers, carriers, and OEMs, Callisto unlocks new revenue streams by transforming refurbished devices into profitable assets. By linking sellers to a vast global network of buyers, the platform ensures both parties benefit from its extensive marketplace.

Since its launch in April 2019, Callisto has facilitated $1.6 billion in Gross Merchandise Value (GMV), showcasing a staggering 2,181% growth in sales. In the past year alone, the platform added 620 new buyers and achieved a GMV of $600 million. These milestones underscore Callisto’s position as a cornerstone of Alchemy’s strategic expansion, offering an efficient and trusted environment for global tech trading.

Samsung advances 6G innovation with AI and sustainability focus

Samsung Electronics has marked a pivotal moment in the next-generation mobile communication landscape with the release of its 6G white paper, “AI-Native and Sustainable Communication.” Published on February 6, the document explores emerging trends and strategic directions for future mobile networks, addressing the growing demands of users and operators, the rise of AI, and evolving industry standards. It emphasises the need for innovative solutions to handle increasing data traffic and improve user experience in the 6G era, while also anticipating transformative services like immersive reality, digital twins, and ubiquitous connectivity.

The white paper identifies four key themes: AI Integration, Energy Efficiency, Coverage Expansion, and Next-Generation Security. Samsung aims to embed advanced AI technologies across its communication systems to optimise network performance, predict congestion, automate maintenance, and deliver personalised, sustainable user experiences. Charlie Zhang, Senior VP at Samsung Research’s Next-Generation Communication Research Center, emphasised the company’s dedication, stating that as 6G standardisation progresses, their priority is to create technologies that meet evolving market demands. This underscores Samsung’s proactive role in shaping the future of global telecommunications.

The evolution from 1G to 5G has brought faster speeds, lower latency, and the ability to connect more devices, enabling advancements like IoT and smart cities. As the industry transitions to 6G, sustainability is becoming a core focus, reflecting broader efforts to reduce carbon footprints and promote eco-friendly innovations. Standardisation, led by organisations like the ITU and 3GPP, ensures global interoperability, and Samsung’s white paper represents an early step in this process. By integrating sustainability and AI, Samsung is positioning itself as a leader in the race for 6G, driving both technological and environmental progress.

Cellnex retains top spot in DJSI Europe for sustainability leadership

For the second consecutive year, Cellnex has been recognised as the sole telecommunications infrastructure operator included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index Europe (DJSI Europe). This prestigious index, managed by S&P Global, serves as a benchmark for sustainability at both European and global levels. Cellnex’s inclusion highlights its leadership in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices, solidifying its position among the top four telecommunications companies in Europe. This achievement underscores the company’s commitment to integrating sustainability into its core operations and strategy.

Cellnex’s performance in the DJSI Europe is particularly notable across three key dimensions. In the environmental category, the company excels in climate change management and environmental strategy. Economically, it stands out for its transparency, strong governance, and double materiality analysis. Socially, Cellnex is recognised for its labor practices and dedication to human rights. Vincent Cuvillier, Chief Strategy Officer of Cellnex, emphasised the significance of this recognition, highlighting that being ranked among the most sustainable companies in a highly competitive sector like telecommunications is a testament to their teams’ dedication and the integral role sustainability plays in their business model.

The selection process for the DJSI Europe is rigorous, with over 13,000 companies invited to participate in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA). More than 3,500 companies responded to a detailed questionnaire covering over 100 ESG-related topics. S&P Global evaluates both public and private data to assess company performance, with only the top 10% of each sector qualifying for inclusion in the index. Cellnex’s consistent presence in this elite group reflects its ongoing efforts to meet and exceed sustainability benchmarks.

Beyond the DJSI Europe, Cellnex is also featured in other leading global sustainability indices, including CDP, Sustainalytics, FTSE4Good, and MSCI.
