International Women’s Day
This year’s International Women’s Day theme is Cracking the Code: Innovation for a gender-equal future. And as a female-founded tech business, it’s a topic that’s right up our alley.
At Circle In, we believe in order for there to be innovation for a gender-equal future, the fundamentals need to be set right, starting with pay and representation. For this to happen, there needs to be three critical changes:
1. Pay equality
According to WGEAs latest data, the gender pay gap is 22.8%, which translates to women earning, on average, $26,596 pa less than men.?
Sobering research released yesterday by the Australian Institute's Centre for Future Work shows the key driver of the gap in retirement savings is the gender pay gap. The study found that the gender pay gap prevails across all industries and occupations, even those traditionally dominated by women.
While the government’s proposed gender pay gap legislation is a positive step, it relies too heavily on employers reporting accurately on their pay data versus looking at the root causes of the problem.
2. Superannuation parity
The same study also showed that “women earning the median wage would accumulate about $393,676 in super, $151,000 below the level defined as a comfortable retirement by the Association of Super Funds Australia.”
And of course, we know that women over the age of 55 are the fastest-growing group to experience homelessness.
The systems are simply not set up to safeguard women against any challenges they may face as they age and retire.?Today is an important day to consider how we can protect women’s retirement outcomes, particularly when they take time out of the workforce - including super on paid parental leave.
3. The authority gap?
Let’s look beyond the clickbait headlines proclaiming that women in senior positions are calling it quits and tackle the issue of why there is such disparity between men and women in leadership positions, to begin with. Deeply ingrained gender norms and societal expectations play a huge role.
The Fatherhood Trap: Why Australian Dads Want To Take Parental Leave But Don’t (Or Can’t).
Nearly ??of Dads want to take paid parental leave but ??of organizations don’t offer it.
That’s the message from over 400 dads in our latest research report, released later this month.?

Dads — especially younger dads — want to take parental leave, but the organisational, social and cultural factors that inhibit them from taking it do still exist.
Despite the benefits to child development, workforce participation and economic security for women, the take up of parental leave by dads in Australia is still relatively low. Why is this, and what do we need to do to ensure the dial shifts when it comes to dads taking parental leave?

Say hello to Claire Seeber. Claire is an internationally recognised Career and Leadership Coach and founder of Eating Your Cake Too - a business on a mission to help ambitious women drive their career and leadership success.
She’s our guest in the latest episode of Empathy Talks, encouraging leaders to carve out time and make space to be curious and truly listen.??
“You can’t be an effective leader without having empathy because it means you’re only really seeing the journey that you need to take people on through one lens - your own.”
Circle In leaders recognised in award programs
Circle In has been shortlisted as finalists in not one but two Women Leading Tech Awards for 2023: our co-founder Jodi Geddes for Entrepreneur/Founder; and our GM Liz Fox for Executive Leader.
As a female-founded startup, it is fantastic to see so many women from the startup ecosystem in Australia represented throughout the award categories.
“There is much work to be done to achieve greater representation of women starting, scaling, and securing funding for start-ups in Australia. There would be no start-ups without innovation, and we will not achieve a gender-equal future without investment in women and backing our capacity to build awesome businesses.” - Liz Fox, General Manager.
We’re also equally thrilled to announce that Jodi Geddes and Kate Pollard have been selected to join the SBE Global Cohort for 2023.
This is a fantastic opportunity for Jodi and Kate to learn alongside and from some of the best minds in the business as we scale up.
