Silicon Austria Labs (SAL)
Unfold the future of electronic based systems. Unfold yourself.
A message from Gerald Murauer , CEO of SAL:
"With great pleasure I can announce that SAL in Graz has finally moved to its new headquarters in Sandgasse 34 at the Campus Inffeldgasse at TU Graz. In the new SAL Building we can further enhance our research activities in our high-tech equipped labs. Progress in all areas is what drives us. The nomination of our successful and renowned Tiny Power Box for the innovation award in Carinthia not only shows the importance of this project, but also acknowledges the great research results the whole team has already achieved."
A message from Bruno Clerckx , CTO of SAL:
"It's great to see SAL at international conferences with a wide variety of key topics, ranging from nanotechnology and microsystem technologies to printed electronics. Our colleagues participated in talks and poster presentations, showcasing our innovative research. International visibility is very important for SAL and therefore, we are currently planning new formats to reach more people with our research. Further information on that will follow soon!"
Appreciation for Innovation
As the highest award in the field of R&D in Carinthia, the "Innovation and Research Award of the State of Carinthia" recognizes people, companies and research institutions that drive and shape ideas for the future.
SAL was nominated with its Tiny Power Box and enters the race in the category "Research Facility" at this year's award. The award ceremony and announcement of the winners will take place on April 27, 2023 at the Lakeside Science & Technology Park in Klagenfurt am W?rthersee. Fingers crossed!
Wooden it be nice
Wood has a long history of utilization in traditional areas of application such as furniture or as a solid building material. Because wood is both sustainable and elegant, it has also been used in the mobility and automotive industry recently.
In the project WoodSigns wood veneer surfaces, which are part of the interior design of jet aircrafts, will be transformed into smart and functional components, using sustainable technologies. The FFG funded project is coordinated by the research unit Sensor Applications at SAL under the lead of project manager Lukas Rauter , with other partners being F/List GmbH and Kompetenzzentrum Holz GmbH.
The aim of the project is to replace conventional switching elements and electronics, such as LED lamps, as well as plastic parts with wooden and sustainable components in aircrafts.
When Wi-Fi and 5G meet TSN
Many emerging applications require a higher level of flexibility, modularity, and efficiency but are dependent on advancements in communication infrastructure and distributed computing. Time-sensitive networking (TSN) standards aim at providing vendor agnostic, reliable, and deterministic communications over the Ethernet, but lack in flexibility and modularity provisions.?
In this paper, Mahin Ahmed , Raheeb Muzaffar , Hans-Peter Bernhard (all SAL), óscar Seijo Gómez, PhD and I?aki Val comprehensively analyze the recent standardization efforts and developments in IEEE 802.11 (norm for Wi-Fi) and 5G to enable low-latency, deterministic communications and present the current status of their integration with wired TSN.

New home for SAL Graz
After almost 2.5 years of construction, the SAL team in Graz moved to its new "SAL Building" at the Campus Inffeldgasse of TU Graz at the beginning of March. You can now find us at Sandgasse 34, 8010 Graz.
Four floors on 3,300 square meters will provide more lab space and new offices for up to 250 SAL employees in the future. A special highlight of the building are the open space areas where team meetings, science talks and other inspirational presentations are going to take place. The official inauguration of the building with representatives from politics, academia and industry will be on May 3.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to a smooth transition!
Diving into the world of printed electronics at LOPEC
From February 28 to March 2, LOPEC (Large-area, Organic & Printed Electronics Convention), the world's leading trade show and convention for flexible and printed electronics, has taken place in Munich, Germany. The combination of trade show and congress is also special, which makes the key technology "printed electronics" even more versatile to experience. SAL was present with its Printed Electronics team under the lead of Jürgen Kosel , Head of Research Unit Sensor Applications.
Trip to the coast of Oman
From February 22-23, Christina Hirschl , Head of Sensor?Systems, and? Mohssen MORIDI , Head of Microsystems?at SAL, attended ISES Middle East in Muscat, Oman to learn more about the semiconductor industry development in Oman and engage with international industry professionals. In his talk during the conference, Mohssen Moridi presented the journey of SAL to become a world class research center by focusing on innovation, digitalization and our impact on the next generations.
