The Future of Fish team was excited to connect in-person again with our colleauges at this year’s Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions Annual Summit. Peru’s Seafood Program Director, Ursula Ormeno , lead a lightning round conversation about promoting responsible fishing and consumption in Peru’s domestic market, Luis Miguel Orme?o held a lightning round conversation about the use of loan guarantees to unlock access to finance and improve artisanal fishers’ environmental, social, and business performance and Chile Director, Diego Undurraga , hosted a sessions on scaling responsible commercialization with artisanal fishers.
In addition to supporting our colleagues’ presentations, the team enjoyed former FoFer Marah Hardt 's Sexsea Trivia session — an interactive, trivia-based exploration of why and how healthy fisheries depend on successful sex in the sea. The Alliance Annual Conference is always a great place to learn about emerging trends in the movement and to forge strategic partnerships with NGOs, businesses, and other experts committed to environmental and social responsibility in seafood.?
While in Puerto Rico, the Future of Fish team took the time to visit our friends at Carbonwave . Carbonwave is using sargassum to create a range of products for agriculture, textiles, personal care and cosmetics. The team learned about vegan leather and had a chance to try the SeaBalance emulsifier products. Future of Fish’s Stephanie Stinson has been digging into how the gaps in gender data impacts the ability to achieve the sustainable development goals, in particular SDG 14 - Life Below Water, in small scale fisheries. In this three part series she explores the impacts of gender data on the SDGs , how the exclusion of women from data impacts the environment and how digital solutions can help address the gap .?
