The Cybersecurity Risks of Working in Public Spaces

Essential Tips for Safe Remote Working

In recent years, the rise of remote and hybrid working has transformed the traditional landscape of work. Cafes now double as remote work hubs, and the flexible nature of remote work continues to redefine where and how we work.

A study conducted by Global Workspace Survey by IWG reveals that more than half of the survey respondents (54%) indicated that the option to work from various locations is more important than additional holiday allowances. This trend spans across all age groups, debunking the myth that only younger workers seek flexible working conditions. HR Review revealed that almost one quarter (23%) of employed UK citizens, equivalent to seven million workers, regularly opt to work in a café instead of at home or in their office.

But is it actually safe to conduct professional work in a public setting? These are the potential risks of working in a public space:

  • Wi-Fi risks: Public networks in cafes are generally less secure, risking potential unauthorised access.
  • Data security: Public computers and networks risk hacking or malware threats, potentially jeopardising data security.
  • Visual privacy: Working in cafes can expose information, potentially compromising visual privacy.
  • Eavesdropping: Conversations in cafes may be overheard, posing confidentiality risks.
  • Limited control: Less control over surroundings increases the risk of unauthorised access.

How you can mitigate security risks and enhance privacy:

Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN): When working from public spaces, your internet connection is often exposed to a higher risk of cyberattacks. Utilizing a VPN is a crucial step to enhance your online security. A VPN encrypts your internet connection, making it much harder for hackers to intercept your data. By routing your traffic through a secure server, it also masks your IP address, providing an additional layer of privacy. This is especially important on public Wi-Fi networks, which are notorious for their vulnerabilities.

Secure Your Devices: Securing your devices is a fundamental aspect of protecting your information when working remotely. Start with implementing strong, unique passwords for all your accounts. Additionally, enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) provides an extra layer of security, requiring not only a password but also a second form of verification. Regularly updating your devices with the latest security patches is equally critical, as these updates often fix known vulnerabilities that could be exploited by cybercriminals.

Invest in a Privacy Screen: A privacy screen for your laptop can significantly reduce the risk of visual hacking in public places. These screens limit the viewing angle of your display, so only someone directly in front of it can see the content clearly. This simple tool can prevent prying eyes from glancing at sensitive information. When working in cafes or other public spaces, it’s easy for someone nearby to take a quick look at your screen, potentially compromising your data.

Regularly Update Security Software: Keeping your antivirus and security software up to date is essential for safeguarding against potential threats. These programs are designed to detect and neutralize malware, spyware, and other malicious software. However, to remain effective, they need to be regularly updated with the latest threat definitions.

Use Encrypted Communication Tools: Encryption ensures that the information shared is only accessible to the intended recipient. Tools like encrypted email services and secure messaging apps protect your conversations from being intercepted by unauthorized parties. This is particularly important when discussing sensitive information or sharing confidential documents.

By following these steps, you can significantly enhance your security and privacy while working in public spaces. These measures help protect your data and ensure that your work remains confidential, even outside the traditional office environment.
