The latest news from the world of copywriting and translation
AI continues to dominate the headlines in both copywriting and translation, with ChatGPT4 promising to be bigger, better and faster than the previous iteration.
How it will impact translation and copywriting remains to be seen, but I don't fear for my job. In my opinion, AI is a tool that can be harnessed to increase productivity and speed up workflow.
I consider ChatGPT to be an idea-generation tool but not a replacement for a human writer. In my opinion, it lacks the necessary empathy, emotion, personalisation, and a deep cultural understanding of the target language to produce publishable customised content.
If everyone stopped using humans to create content or translate tomorrow, languages wouldn't evolve, and there would be no creative innovation. I believe hiring a human to stand out in a crowded marketplace is more important now than ever, so your business can be a driver of change through imagination, expertise and a healthy dose of humanity.

Community support
I continue to support Little Lifesavers, a charity that relies on volunteers to go into schools and teach life-saving CPR and choking rescue techniques to children to empower them to intervene and save lives should the opportunity arise. We'd love to hear from anyone willing to volunteer to provide this training in their local area.

What have I been up to?
April was a busy networking month for me. I joined the BNI Languages Power Team, which means that I am now part of a global group of language service providers spanning the globe offering translation, proofreading, copywriting, language training and voiceover services.
Do reach out if you need any translation or localisation work, as I now have access to a global group of linguists.
London networking events
In early April attended a fantastic brainstorming and business strategy meeting in the heart of London's Piccadilly district hosted by Sheree Owen.
Then, on 4 April, I squeezed in three networking events in one day, starting with an early morning breakfast meeting at BNI Central in the beautiful Art Deco Strand Palace Hotel, followed by a lunch meeting with the Women In Business Network (WIBN) City & Shoreditch group at The Folly Bar in Gracechurch Street and lastly, The Doyle Club, which is for people working in and serving the Property and Construction industry.
Last month I also attended The Doyle Club's St. George's Day lunch and the BNI Big Breakfast event at the Institute of Directors in Pall Mall.
As with all networking events, I made some new connections and continued to foster existing relationships with clients and collaborators alike.
AI faux pas for the month
This month my AI bugbear was the incorrect translation of the French "contrat" which had been translated as "contract", when in fact, it should have been translated as "policy" as it was in the context of an insurance policy document.
Fun fact
Did you know Tiramisù, that well-loved Italian dessert, actually means "pick me up"? I shared this with fellow translator Joachim Lépine on LinkedIn, who recently called his puppy after the famous dessert. He was thrilled and said the name fits like a glove as his puppy is adorable and loves being picked up.
What have I learnt this month?
Sales strategist Sheree Owen Click here has been researching business trends lately and shared the term 'portfolio businesses' in a networking meeting, which I thought was a great way of describing businesses that offer multiple services, such as I do. Would you describe your business as a portfolio business?
