Navigating Job Transitions: A Crossroads Worth Exploring

In the evolving world of job hunting there's a truth; there are plenty of opportunities, for job seekers who have the right qualifications and experience. Despite uncertainties and global concerns, the job market remains robust presenting both challenges and chances.

Employers are grappling with talent shortages and the difficulties of retaining staff while employees are taking advantage of the "Great Resignation" to negotiate terms for themselves.

Switching jobs is often seen as a way to advance one's career, earn pay and improve personal well-being. This viewpoint is supported by EY's Work Reimagined study, which found that 43% of surveyed employees expressed a likelihood of leaving their jobs within the next year. Among those considering changing jobs 35% prioritize improved compensation, 25% seek career growth opportunities and 18% aim for work arrangements.

Similarly, according to PWC's Global Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey involving 52,195 workers across 44 countries, one in five workers is contemplating transitioning, to an employer in the year.

However, not all transitions go smoothly. Many individuals who participate in the "Great Resignation" experience feelings of regret.

There are two reasons why people feel regret, in these situations; the fear of facing a favorable job market and the disappointment of not meeting their expectations.

According to a study conducted by the What Works Centre for Wellbeing in the UK even if new roles initially bring a boost in morale and professional growth these benefits tend to diminish within a year. This leaves individuals who find themselves in unsatisfying roles with a decision; endure the unhappiness or take the risk of compromising their CV integrity by searching for a more fulfilling opportunity.

Prior to the pandemic, it was commonly advised to stay with an employer for two years to avoid being perceived as disloyal. However, this perception is changing, among job seekers. Recent research by The Muse reveals that 80% of job seekers believe it is acceptable to leave a job they dislike within six months—a view that is likely shared by employers.

For those navigating through this job-hunting journey and seeking informed decisions, it is crucial to carefully evaluate both the advantages and disadvantages before making any leaps. The first step is clearly identifying what motivates you to consider quitting—whether it is driven by goals, career advancement opportunities, work-life balance concerns or simply dissatisfaction.

Afterward, it becomes essential to ensure that any transition aligns, with your identified objectives. For example, if your top priority is achieving a work-life balance it may not be effective to focus on chasing a higher salary through a new job.

Despite the steps appearing simple many people tend to overlook the importance of conducting research before making a transition. Platforms such, as Glassdoor provide insights into how current and former employees rate companies. Seeking opinions from social networks well as conducting a straightforward Google search can help uncover any potential red flags.

In this changing job market embarking on a professional journey requires careful consideration and thorough research. By navigating the crossroads of job hunting with attention, to detail and diligence individuals can ensure that the path they choose truly leads to opportunities.

CISO Salary Growth Slows in 2023: Key Findings

A recent study by IANS Research and Artico Search highlights a slowdown in Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) salary growth for 2023, with 20% of CISOs reporting no salary increase. The research, based on a survey of over 600 CISOs in the US and Canada, reveals an average total compensation increase of 11% in the past year, down from a 25% increase in the previous year. Base salary growth has decreased from 10% to 7% in 2023.

The study also uncovers a widening salary gap among CISOs, with 52% earning less than $400,000 annually. Among these, 30% earn less than $300,000, and 22% earn between $300,000 and $400,000. A smaller percentage (6%) fall into the 'middle earners' category, with annual salaries between $500,000 and $600,000, while 8% earn between $600,000 and $700,000. A substantial 20% of CISOs command annual compensation exceeding $700,000.

The report also highlights variations in CISO salaries across different industries, with finance and tech sectors offering the highest average salaries, while legal, healthcare, and manufacturing sectors provide lower compensation packages.

A notable finding is that 75% of CISOs are considering changing jobs within the next year, up from 67% in 2022. This growing trend is attributed to the widening responsibilities of the CISO role, which are not consistently matched with increased compensation. Economic factors, including the downturn, are contributing to the slower salary growth.
