• The City of Edmonton plans to demolish the former Dwayne's Home transitional housing facility , located at 100 Avenue and 102 Street.
• Leaders from NorQuest College and MacEwan University are advocating for the creation of an education district in downtown Edmonton to accommodate expected student population growth of 30% to 50% by 2030.
• The federal government is moving public servants from downtown , citing safety concerns.
• The City of Edmonton launched an interactive dashboard to share progress on its Economic Action Plan goals.
• Edmonton?continued as the leader in rent growth among Canada’s largest cities, posting a 14.6 per cent annual increase in asking rents for apartments. Read more.

Fair and Equitable Taxation, Regulation and Policies

• Spring capital budget adjustment.?City administration recommends increasing the 2023-2026 capital budget by $262.6 million , scheduled for debate on June 11.
• BOMA Edmonton and BOMA Calgary conducted a survey of members to find out the impact of an elevator safety code that could come into effect Oct. 1, 2024. Based on the results, the two organizations jointly submitted a letter to Minister Rick McIver, Alberta Municipal Affairs asking for more time and consultation with Industry. Learn more.

• BOMA BEST Smart is now recognized by GRESB. BOMA BEST is excited to announce that GRESB is now recognizing the BOMA BEST Smart Program. Having a BOMA BEST Smart certification will earn?partial points ?for BC1.2 Operational Building Certifications. BOMA BEST Smart will be included in Appendix 4a of the 2024 GRESB Real Estate Assessment Reference Guide and will be selectable in the GRESB Asset Portal starting June 8th. This inclusion underscores the growing importance of smart and sustainable building certifications in global real estate benchmarking. • Spartan Controls ' Nannette Ho-Covernton received the 2024 Women in Engineering & Geoscience Champion Award from APEGA for her contributions to diversity and support for women in engineering and geoscience.
• BOMA Edmonton has formed a partnership with MacEwan University’s School of Business and Property Management Minor to bring members of the BOMA Edmonton Emerging Leaders Committee, such as Dan Hein of Aspen Properties, to high school classrooms to showcase careers in commercial real estate, highlighting property management.
