On the latest episode of LTC Heroes...

Hey there!

Welcome back to our LTC Heroes Newsletter. And gosh, what an exciting time it’s been! I’m sure you already knew about the winter LTC conventions like the GHCA Expo and MHCA. Did you attend any of them? I did and had a blast meeting and greeting all the LTC heroes who attended.?That’s why I thought I’d include a little treat for you today from one of my interviews at the GHCA Expo.

If you haven’t heard of him before, then I spoke with Dr. David Gifford, the chief medical officer from the American Health Care Association at the GHCA Expo. He spoke about current LTC problems like staffing, COVID, and the ever-changing regulations that are confusing for everyone in our industry.?

But being a glass half full kinda-guy, Gifford also shared his positive insights on how we can overcome these problems and make a comeback stronger than ever before!?

“The challenge is that people have such a negative view of nursing homes. But the staff who work in nursing homes care deeply about the residents, and they view their work as providing value. If we can capitalize on understanding what it means to provide care to the elderly in our setting, the fun you can have with the team, and the fun you can have with the residents and the family, then we will get people to come.” - Dr. David Gifford.

Gifford doesn’t stop here. He also speaks about management and his new training program that has trained over 350,000 temporary Nurse Assistants this past year!?

Have you ever thought about introducing holistic approaches to your facility? As you know, long-term care is more than just administering medication and attending ADLs. It encompasses every aspect of a resident’s life, such as exercise, dietary requirements, and social activities to keep their minds sharp.?

So when I spoke to Dr. Roger Landry, a preventive medicine physician, he really enlightened me on the effectiveness of holistic approaches, the impact on successful aging, and going above and beyond to provide purpose, meaning, and enrichment to the lives of his residents.?

“We are complex humans. We're not just our cardiovascular system when we're not just our brain function. If we're going to live healthily and have longevity, it's important that we pay attention to our lifestyle in a very holistic way.” - Dr. Roger Landry.

We know that our industry’s reputation has taken a recent hit, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make a comeback. Like Dr. Gifford, David Hopkins, the executive director at the Grand Villa of Altamonte Springs, thinks that now is the perfect time for our industry to revamp and change the negativity, starting with a new marketing and sales strategy.

“Sales is very unique in long-term care. It's a process that you need to get to understand, you need to develop a relationship with someone who is at their most vulnerable times. It’s all about building a meaningful relationship with the resident and their family members.” - David Hopkins.

Hopkins draws his marketing knowledge from his past experience at Disney Corporations. He adapts and translates similar approaches into long-term care with great success. Well, that’s everything for today. Let’s power through and make LTC GREAT again!
