The South African Police Service (SAPS) has released its crime statistics for Quarter 2 (July to September) of the 2024/2025 period, offering a comparative analysis against previous years. The report reveals notable fluctuations in various crime categories, showcasing both encouraging declines and alarming increases.
Encouraging Declines in Certain Crimes
Several categories of crime have shown significant decreases, reflecting positive progress in law enforcement efforts. Carjacking incidents fell by 9.4%, with 4,788 cases reported in 2024/2025 compared to 5,149 in the previous year. Similarly, robbery at non-residential premises saw a substantial 21.1% reduction, dropping from 14,775 incidents in 2023/2024 to 12,473 in this period.
Burglary at non-residential premises also declined by 15.6%, translating to over 2,300 fewer incidents. Additionally, cash-in-transit robberies saw a reduction, though exact figures were not disclosed. Truck hijackings experienced a 15.3% drop, from 542 incidents in 2023/2024 to 459 in 2024/2025, indicating a positive trend in combating this violent crime.
Property-related crimes also showed improvements. Stock theft incidents decreased from 6,935 to 6,649, while theft out of or from motor vehicles dropped significantly, with 20,820 cases reported compared to 22,850 in the previous year. Furthermore, motor vehicle and motorcycle theft declined from 9,586 cases in 2023/2024 to 8,597 in 2024/2025. The most notable improvement was in residential burglaries, which saw a decrease of 3,520 incidents, from 38,151 to 34,631, signaling enhanced security measures in residential areas.
Rising Crime Categories Raise Concerns
Despite these positive developments, certain crimes have increased, highlighting areas of concern. Commercial crime surged by 18.5%, rising from 30,630 incidents in 2023/2024 to 36,300 in 2024/2025. This trend suggests that businesses are increasingly being targeted, underscoring the need for enhanced security measures and fraud prevention strategies.
Another area of concern is the rise in violent crimes. Kidnappings surged by 7.6%, reflecting a troubling trend in crimes against individuals. Attempted murder increased by 2.2%, while contact sexual offenses rose by 1.2%, indicating a pressing need for continued efforts to combat gender-based violence and personal safety threats.
Although murder rates saw a decrease of 5.8% (from 7,345 in 2023/2024 to 6,945 in 2024/2025), the persistence of high numbers remains a serious issue. Common assault showed a slight decline of 1.4%, but the overall picture of violent crimes remains mixed.
Broader Crime Trends
Other crime categories also exhibited varying trends. Theft cases not categorized elsewhere decreased significantly, from 67,632 in 2023/2024 to 61,079 in 2024/2025. Shoplifting followed a similar trend, dropping from 14,016 incidents in the previous year to 11,056 this year. However, the continuous rise in commercial crime remains a notable exception to this downward trend.
A Complex Crime Landscape
The latest crime statistics highlight both progress and ongoing challenges in South Africa's fight against crime. While notable reductions in carjackings, truck hijackings, and residential burglaries indicate effective law enforcement strategies, the sharp rise in commercial crime and kidnappings underscores the evolving nature of criminal activity.
For businesses, individuals, and law enforcement agencies, these statistics emphasize the need for vigilance, proactive security measures, and continued investment in crime prevention initiatives. Addressing both declining and rising crime trends will be crucial in ensuring a safer South Africa for all.
