Last Week in AI: Major Developments and Announcements

Week ended 14 September 2024

The world of artificial intelligence saw a flurry of activity in the last two week, with several groundbreaking announcements and developments. Here’s a detailed look at the key highlights:

OpenAI Releases GPT-o1 Model

OpenAI unveiled its latest AI model, GPT-o1, which promises significant improvements in reasoning and mathematical abilities. The model is available in two versions: o1-preview and o1-mini to OpenAI ChatGPT Plus subscribers, with the main o1 model set to be released soon. GPT-o1 has demonstrated impressive performance on benchmarks, excelling in complex tasks such as coding and scientific problem-solving.

OpenAI says these o1 AI models designed to spend more time thinking before they respond. They can reason through complex tasks and solve harder problems than previous models in science, coding, and ma

th. This new model represents a major step forward in AI capabilities, particularly in its ability to reason through problems more effectively.

OpenAI trained these models to spend more time thinking through problems before they respond, much like a person would. Through training, they learn to refine their thinking process, try different strategies, and recognize their mistakes.?

In our tests, the next model update performs similarly to PhD students on challenging benchmark tasks in physics, chemistry, and biology. We also found that it excels in math and coding. In a qualifying exam for the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO), GPT-4o correctly solved only 13% of problems, while the reasoning model scored 83%. Their coding abilities were evaluated in contests and reached the 89th percentile in Codeforces competitions. You can read more about this in our technical research post.

Ilya Sutskever Raises $1 Billion for Safe Superintelligence Startup

Ilya Sutskever, co-founder of OpenAI, launched a new venture named Safe Superintelligence (SSI) afew months ago and he announced that he had secured a staggering $1 billion in funding from prominent investors like Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia. SSI aims to develop AI systems that surpass human capabilities while ensuring safety and alignment with human values.

This funding will be used to acquire computing power and hire top-tier researchers and engineers.

Dr. Fei-Fei Li’s New AI Startup Focuses on Spatial Intelligence

Renowned AI researcher Dr. Fei-Fei Li has raised $230 million for her new startup, World Labs, which aims to tackle the challenge of spatial intelligence. The startup will develop AI technology capable of understanding and interacting with the three-dimensional physical world.

According to the startup website, World Labs is a spatial intelligence AI company building Large World Models (LWMs) to perceive, generate, and interact with the 3D world. The team aims to lift AI models from the 2D plane of pixels to full 3D worlds - both virtual and real - endowing them with spatial intelligence as rich as our own. Human spatial intelligence evolved over millennia; but in this time of extraordinary progress, we see the opportunity to imbue AI with this ability in the near term.

World Labs was founded by visionary AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li along with Justin Johnson, Christoph Lassner, and Ben Mildenhall; each a world-renowned technologist in computer vision and graphics. Word Labs claims to be bringing together the most formidable slate of pixel talent ever assembled - from AI research to systems engineering to product design - creating a tight feedback loop between their spatially intelligent foundation models and products that will empower our users.T

We wait to see what the startup will anounce first as their product. For now, we watch the space as tthis could have significant implications for fields such as robotics, augmented reality, and virtual reality.

Yi-Coder Goes Open Source

Yi-Coder, a series of open-source code language models, has been released by 01.AI8. These models, which include versions with 1.5 billion and 9 billion parameters, excel in coding tasks and support 52 programming languages.

The 'Small but Mighty' LLM offers SOTA coding performance under 10B parameters. Excel in code editing, completion, debugging, and math reasoning.

  • 2 sizes: 9B & 1.5B (Chat & Base)
  • 128K context length
  • Support 52 programming languages

Yi-Coder’s open-source nature democratises access to advanced coding tools, potentially revolutionising how developers work with large-scale projects.

HuggingChat and Other Chatbots Now Available in Mozilla Firefox

Mozilla Firefox has integrated several AI chatbots, including HuggingChat, into its browser.

Starting with Firefox version 130 released 3 September, Firefox now offers an easy way to try experimental features with a new Firefox Labs page in Settings.

  • AI Chatbot feature lets you add the chatbot of your choice to the sidebar, for quick access as you browse.
  • Picture-in-Picture auto-open experiment enables PiP on active videos when switching tabs.Users can now access these chatbots directly from the sidebar, allowing for seamless multitasking and enhanced productivity while browsing.

This integration reflects a growing trend of embedding AI tools into everyday applications to improve user experience.

PaperQA2 Exceeds Human Performance

PaperQA2, a new AI model, has surpassed human performance on several important metrics. This achievement highlights the rapid advancements in AI research and its potential to outperform humans in various cognitive tasks. The model’s success underscores the increasing capabilities of AI systems in understanding and processing complex information.

Gina AI Releases Reader-LM Models

Gina AI has introduced two new small language models, Reader-LM-0.5B and Reader-LM-1.5B. These models are designed to convert raw, noisy HTML into clean Markdown, making them valuable tools for content creators and developers. The release of these models demonstrates the ongoing innovation in developing specialized AI tools for specific tasks.

Conclusion

Last two week’s announcements underscore the rapid pace of innovation in the AI field. From significant funding rounds and new model releases to in-roads into spatial intelligence and open-source tools, these developments are shaping the future of artificial intelligence.

Stay tuned for more updates as the AI landscape continues to evolve and we bring you the changes each week.
