Last of the Summer Wine - Spanish Style!

I've spent the last few weeks in my second home in Spain, the benefits of being a digital nomad. However it is not without its challenges. To put it simply everything is so very “Spanish” which sometimes doesn’t make life very easy!

My house must be at least 15 years old and was bought “Off Plan.” Butthe builder went bankrupt… and then my partner died… and I was left with an unfinished house on a hill.

To be honest I didn’t have the headspace at the time, so it was left neglected and unloved until last year when I engaged a local builder/handyman to finish it off.

Recently I had a friend Jane visit for a few days, and Jane being Jane and a professional chef I was looking forward to a spectacular lunch she had promised me. But what I wasn’t banking on was her running four rings, the oven, having the kettle on AND Alexa blaring… making the whole of my electricity trip.

And no matter how many times we hit the reset fuse switch, it would trip again…. and again.. and again.

So I put a call out on the “residents” WhatsApp – could anyone help with my problem?

First up was Andy, an old boy who spent quite a long time doing exactly what we had done - flipping fuses up and down with his fingers crossed in the remote hope that something might happen – but nothing.

Then along came Ray, and then Mike, and finally Daryn… all gentlemen of a certain age. And in true “Last of the Summer Wine” fashion the four of them set to work to find the problem. Which I guess made me Nora Batty, wrinkled tights and all.

At one point Mike was at the end of the road at the main junction box…Andy was stationed outside the house… while Daryn was inside switching things on and off.

And eventually by a process of elimination they identified that the problem was “probably” in a padlocked fuse box on the road.

When (after calling ANOTHER person in) they were able to unlock thefuse box, it appeared that someone had in fact removed the breakers…and my house was in fact in danger of literally exploding! BOOM!!

To make matters worse it was a Bank Holiday in Spain, so it was going to be tricky getting someone out. But not to be thwarted in their mission, Compo, Clegg and the gang all hit their phones and eventually got a local electrician to come down and work his magic.

And so by all coming together as a group they solved the problem… a bit like my monthly Masterminds.
