Last Rites Production Blog WB 27/2/23
We spent the beginning of this week set dressing our locations as we prepared to shoot later on this week. First we began with decorating a bedroom to look like our lead character's love interest's, room.
To transform the space into a stereotypical student house we added posters and postcards to the walls in a uneven arrangement to look hastily put up by a university student. We also had to to sell the idea that this was a girl's bedroom so we used stereotypical feminine props and small desktop items on the dresser and side table such as perfume bottles, candles, plants, books and makeup products to give the room a 'lived-in' look.
Our gaffer, Dan Cook, and I also wanted to make use of practical lighting within this scene so we added a string of fairy lights above the bed, a lava lamp and a salt lamp to add a warm glow and a romantic pink/ orange cast to the room. We also changed the bedding that was already in the room to a light pink set which made the room feel brighter and allowed the hue of the practical lights to bounce around the room more.

We also had to dress a living room area for the main party scene in the film. To do this we arranged our assortment of full and empty spirit bottles, various cans and saved takeout containers, that we had specifically collected for the production design of this scene, onto the central table in the party. Silver streamers and a string of star decorations were added to give the impression that the party was hosted by students who had half-heartedly attempted to decorate for the event.
Having collected our equipment from media loans, we wanted to ensure everything was correct and functioning properly so a small test shoot was in order to properly test the camera, lighting and sound equipment. To do this we shot some 'on-set' crew interviews to use in our electronic press kit as part of the release of our film. The interviews included all crew members who expressed their excitement for the upcoming shoot, how they had prepared and what they were looking forward to most in the days to follow.
We are all excited and prepared to shoot and looking forward to what the principal photography period has in store for us.
