Last-mile delivery in Canada. Current State and Challenges
In this blog post, we dig deeper into Canada's last-mile delivery landscape, driven by the rise of e-commerce and shifting consumer expectations. Prime Time, a leading Canadian freight company, stands out for its adept handling of these changes, showcasing its innovation and commitment to operational excellence. Here, we explore the challenges they face and the strategies they employ to provide efficient and sustainable delivery services.
Retail - Last Mile in Canada
To better understand the current state of last-mile delivery among Canadian retail and consumer companies, we conducted a comprehensive online survey involving 57 companies across various sectors, such as apparel, electronics, grocery, specialty, and mass merchants. "Some of the findings surprised us," the report notes. For instance, nearly two-thirds (63 percent) of the companies offer free home delivery, highlighting the prevalent consumer expectation for cost-free shipping options. Notably, same-day grocery home delivery is increasingly available in major urban centers, reflecting a rapid response to the urgent needs of urban consumers. However, those companies not offering free delivery typically charge a standard fee, averaging around $8.
The survey revealed significant differences across retail categories. "Apparel and electronics retailers are most likely to offer free delivery, with 80 percent of apparel and 73 percent of electronics retailers providing this service," compared to just 45 percent of grocery stores. The variance in lead times also underscores businesses' tailored approaches based on their market demands. For example, grocery retailers generally offer the quickest delivery times, often less than a day, essential for perishable goods. In contrast, apparel retailers might take three to five days, accommodating different logistical considerations.
Another exciting aspect uncovered by the survey is the minimum spend required for free delivery, which varies considerably among industries. While consumers typically need to spend between $20 and $50 to qualify for free delivery, grocery retailers set a higher bar with an average minimum spend of $96, likely due to the higher operational costs associated with transporting perishables. The apparel and electronics sectors are more lenient, with electronics retailers often waiving a minimum spend requirement for free shipping.
