Last chance to snap up Gawker; Tim Cook dismisses his critics, and more news.

It's the end of the line for Gawker Media as an independent company — and a first victory for Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel in his (once undercover) battle to end the site. Today is the last day to enter bids for the company, which filed for bankruptcy two months ago under pressure from a $140 million judgment in its invasion of privacy case with wrestler Hulk Hogan. Potential buyers include Ziff Davis, which made a first offer at $90 million, Univision, New York magazine, Penske Media and Vox Media.

Japan's growth is the definition of seesaw. After a stunning first quarter at 2% growth that had observers saying Abenomics were finally working, the second quarter registered barely-there growth of 0.2% annualized. "It's sort of a lonely job." On his five-year anniversary as Apple CEO, Tim Cook gave a long interview to The Washington Post, talking about his leadership style, life after Steve Jobs, taking a political stance and why he doesn't pay attention to those who are calling time of death on Apple. Long story short: he gave zero detail about the Apple car. Long story short but longer than this paragraph, read the tl;dr version by Recode.

“Yes, we’re coming down some this year. Every year isn’t an up, you know. I’ve heard all of it before.”
Tim Cook, Apple CEO

Scare at JFK. Two terminals at the busiest airport in the US were evacuated in a panic Sunday night after a false report of shots fired. Flights were grounded or diverted for two hours.

The internal combustion engine isn't dead yet.Nissan says it's created a new gasoline engine that could make diesel obsolete, just as diesel suffers from its worst PR crisis yet with the Volkswagen emissions scandal. The tech constantly adjusts the compression rate to deliver optimum power and gas efficiency. Nissan is expected to unveil the tech next month at the Paris Motor Show.
