The last of the 5 new bus orders signed by the STIB Board - Westermo Viper Switches Inside

Tuesday, June 19, 2018 - The board of directors of the Brussels Public Transport Society has appointed the manufacturer who will supply its articulated electric hybrid buses. The company IVECO won the framework agreement, subject to the standstill period. The arrival of these 141 articulated electric hybrid buses, coupled with the other 4 orders for new hybrid electric and full electric buses, will make it possible to increase the total capacity of STIB's bus network by around 32% by the end of 2019. In all, 288 buses will be delivered between today and 2019. 

The Board of Directors of STIB has just concluded with IVECO a framework agreement for 141 low-floor articulated electric hybrid buses. This framework agreement covers the study, construction, supply, commissioning of these buses, the delivery of spare parts and the maintenance of electrical storage units and all the components of the pull chain of these buses.

141 articulated electric hybrid buses

In the context of the 5-year framework agreement, the STIB is planning an order for 141 articulated electric hybrid buses, for a total amount of approximately 74.35 million euros, plus a an estimated € 17 million for the service contract for these vehicles. To choose the bus that best meets its needs, STIB tested three prototypes from different manufacturers online for eight weeks.

Everything has been thought of in these vehicles to facilitate the accessibility and travel of travelers: low floor, comfort zone for low users, modular areas that can accommodate either a wheelchair, strollers for children, bus quieter, etc. .

A dual source of energy

The vehicles ordered combine an electric propulsion with a thermal engine. Specifically, the wheels of the vehicle are driven by the electric motor powered by batteries. The diesel engine Euro 6 Update C is present in support to supply the electric motor, when necessary. This system reduces the volume of batteries on board the vehicle while ensuring sufficient autonomy. Viper switches from #Westermo ensure the reliability of the communication.

More vehicles, more capacity!

The articulated electric hybrid bus of IVECO offers a capacity of 103 places. The delivery of these 141 vehicles will begin in May 2019. These vehicles will strengthen the offer for the implementation of the Bus Master Plan.

This articulated electric hybrid bus control comes close to a cycle of 5 electric and hybrid bus drives. The STIB has already ordered standard electric hybrid buses (first firm order of 110 vehicles), electric midibuses (7 vehicles), standard electric buses (5 vehicles) and articulated electric buses (25 vehicles).

Electric minibuses began circulating in early June on the network on the new line 33, full electric. By the end of the year, the STIB network will host its first 95 standard electric hybrid buses and test 5 standard 100% electric buses. Electric and full electric hybrid articulated buses are expected in the course of 2019.
