LAS Announces Indigenous Policy Counsel Position as Key Component to Recently Approved Strategic Plan

Legal Aid Saskatchewan (LAS) is recruiting an Indigenous Policy Counsel to play a critical role in developing and implementing strategies for the effective delivery of legal aid services for Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis) persons.

“We are pleased to begin the recruitment process for this essential role,” says Jayne Mallin, LAS CEO. “Saskatchewan Legal Aid Commission is committed to reconciliation, building relationships with Indigenous communities, and achieving our strategic priority of inclusive justice for our clients. The Indigenous Policy Counsel will be responsible for supporting Legal Aid’s efforts advocating for Indigenous rights and marginalized communities, supporting positive change in Saskatchewan’s judiciary.”

In June 2022, the Commission approved Legal Aid Saskatchewan’s 2022-2025 strategic priorities. The priorities focusing on the client-centered experience and championing access to justice include advancing reconciliation principles, cultivating culturally sensitive experiences for clients, and developing an Indigenous justice strategy. The Indigenous Policy Counsel will lead these efforts through effective working relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities.

A few key accountabilities of this role include:

  • Coordinating Indigenous consultative/advisory processes
  • Developing policies and strategies to enhance Indigenous services within LAS
  • Facilitating initiatives in response to the TRC Calls to Action, including the development of a law reform strategy for overrepresentation in criminal law and child protection
  • Developing practice directives in the area of Gladue rights

“We are seeking a strategic thinker with excellent knowledge of Indigenous social justice issues and Canada’s justice and legal system,” says Mallin. “I look forward to the positive contributions our Indigenous Policy Counsel will have for Legal Aid Saskatchewan as an organization championing access to justice, and to our province’s Indigenous communities and their needs.”
