Larrea tridentata

Hello March!

One of the most prominent shrubs across the Mojave, Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts is the Creosote Bush, Larrea tridentata.?This dominant plant has a remarkable range?from southern California northeast through southern Nevada,?to the southwest corner of Utah, southeast through Arizona and New Mexico, then through western Texas and into northern Mexico.?This incredibly important plant offers so many wonderful benefits from seeds for wild animals, to options for animals to bed under and seek shelter from the sun to its highly valued medicinal properties.?The small pointed green leaves are very waxy which allows for high conservation of water and the ability to survive very high temperatures.??Creosote is known for aggressively competing for water in the soil and prefers dry, well drained conditions in full to part sun. As one of the oldest living plants on the planet, some populations of Creosote have been estimated to be over 11,000 years old.?And who can forget the smell of rain this shrub produces from the aromatic foliage!?Creosote can bloom off and on through out the year with a profusion of single star shaped yellow flowers, but the main bloom time is usually sometime in spring.?As you might imagine, this shrub is very responsive to rain events,?so big rains usually trigger lots of flowers and an amazing show across the desert.

Now let’s fast forward to just a few years ago when our founder Ron Gass was traveling through Yuma along interstate 8 and noticed a majority of the Creosote were not the typical sprawling shape, but rather more upright and almost hedge-like.?Having the option to utilize Creosote as an upright shrub intrigued Ron, so we now are offering a selection we named ‘Yuma’.??Take a look at the attached photos and information sheet highlighting this amazing new selection that I’m sure you’ll find useful, durable and very attractive. Currently we have a nice crop of 5g available if you’re ready to give them a try.?I doubt you’ll be disappointed, and thinking this might even become one of the new standbys for privacy screens, hedging or anywhere you need an upright, evergreen that can handle extreme conditions.

Have you heard? MSWN is delivering trucks into CA every week and spring has sprung! Take a look at our newest availability and photo link to see what’s available.?Be sure to check each new list as items are being added every week!

As always, Alex and I are here and ready to help! We look forward to hearing from you soon!
