The Kumbh Mela occurs every 12 years at Prayagraj (India), following the astronomical alignments of Jupiter, the Sun, and the Moon to celebrate every revolution Brihaspati (Jupiter) completes.
This event is considered a "Maha Kumbh" because it happens after 144 years, or 12 complete Kumbh Melas, at the same location.
It alternates among the following four sacred locations.
The Maha Kumbh Mela is a sacred pilgrimage that attracts millions of pilgrims for: spiritual purification, cultural celebration, and unity.
This year Mahakumbh is celebrated at Prayagraj.
The Ardh Kumbh Mela takes place every six years, halfway between two Purna Kumbh Melas.
It is held in Haridwar and Prayagraj (Allahabad).
What is the meaning of Kumbh?
Kumbh is a Sanskrit word for Pitcher referred to as Kalasha. The elemental meaning of Kumbh says, that it is a confluence of all cultures and is the symbol of spiritual awakening.
History behind Kumbh Mela
?? Mahakumbh is associated with the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) mentioned in Hindu scriptures like the Puranas.
?? The devas (gods) and asuras (demons) collaborated to churn the ocean of milk to extract the nectar of immortality (Amrit)
??During this event, Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of Mohini to distribute the nectar among the gods.
??However, a conflict arose between the gods and demons, and the nectar spilled at four places on Earth: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik.
