Large Tires Removal, Replacement, and inflation

In light of a series of fatal incidents stemming from large tire inflation (Widow Maker), it is imperative to underscore the critical importance of tire inflation safety. The inherent risks associated with the stored energy in tires, particularly those used in commercial and heavy-duty applications, have unfortunately led to tragic outcomes in recent incidents

Risks During inflation:

• Inflated tires store substantial energy, with commercial vehicle tire sidewalls experiencing over 34 tonnes of force.
• Visible cuts and splits are detectable, but internal damage may go unnoticed until reinflated, causing potential 'zipper-failures.'
• Serious injuries or fatalities may occur during tire inflation, wheel disintegration, manual handling, or elevated vehicle collapses.

Precautions to Reduce Explosion Risk:

• Do not inflate significantly underinflated tires without thorough inspection.
• Use airlines with functioning pressure gauges or pressure control devices.
• use a clip-on chuck when inflating tires. This type of chuck provides a secure connection to the valve stem, reducing the likelihood of disconnection during inflation.
• Use airline hoses long enough and with inline valve and pressure gauge to allow operators to stay outside the likely explosion trajectory during inflation.
• Respect the "Line of Fire": When reinflating tires, stay outside the line of fire or explosion trajectory.
• Watch for signs of zipper failures, and if suspected, avoid approaching the tire directly.

Additional Precautions:

• firmly secured tire inflation cage. Consider lining this with mesh to retain debris. For fixed installations, it is helpful to mark the safety exclusion zone on the workshop floor as a reminder to staff.
• a secured horizontal stool and associated clamping mechanism.
• a portable restraint. Examples include a lightweight cover that encloses the tire and wheel rim. This may be particularly useful for off-site repairs.
