Instructional design is a systematic process used for the creation of instructional materials. The process goes beyond creating teaching content to consider how students learn and what effective instructional methods are most helpful for individual learners to achieve their academic goals (Purdue University). Below are some of the potential ways that LLMs can help Instructional Designers.

  • Creating Content: LLMs like ChatGPT can assist instructional designers in creating high-quality content using multiple formats, including text, audio, and video. These models can generate explanations, examples, case studies, and simulations to support learning objectives.
  • Needs Assessment and Analysis: LLMs can analyze existing educational materials, learner profiles, and performance data to identify gaps in knowledge and skills. This step helps create custom-made and all-inclusive instructional strategies to fulfil the needs of learners, individually and collectively.
  • Instructional Strategies: LLMs can provide an understanding of effective instructional strategies and pedagogical approaches based on the latest research and best practices. They can suggest assessments, interactive activities, and multimedia elements to enhance learner engagement and retention.
  • Formative and Summative Assessments Design: LLMs can assist in designing assessments that measure individual learners' progress and mastery of learning objectives. They can generate test questions, rubrics, and performance tasks that align with instructional goals and provide meaningful feedback to learners.
  • The Design of Learning Experience: LLMs can support designing engaging and collaborative learning experiences by suggesting interactive activities, branching scenarios (based on learners' actions in the classroom), and gamification strategies. LLMs also help create learning routes that guide learners through complex concepts and elevate their comprehension.

Using the capabilities of Large Learning Models such as ChatGPT to help instructional designers create a captivating learning experience can simplify, organize, and speed up the learning design development process and steps. The potential outcome is instructional materials that are engaging, interactive, custom-design, effective, and inclusive to improve the learners' learning experience and outcomes.
