The language of teamwork

The language of teamwork

Getting the job done is a universal value for service or production professionals: we can all agree on that and many other universal, generic goals. Now, not only each person has their own style and approach: prevalent styles and patterns can also be found across different cultures and generations. Researchers* have focused on personal (or virtual) workplace interaction between different cultures and languages. Depending on the culture where we come from, we can observe and learn from our colleagues in their professional conduct: more relaxed or obsessed, warm or aloof, top-heavy about decisions or autonomous, to-the-point or social and many other possibilities; this is how we can reflect and grow in diversity.?

*More on this from recommended authors Nancy Adler, Ramesh Tiwari or Tove Kl?vstad, among many others researchers.

Can you relate a case of remarkable workplace values that you’ve learned with colleagues of other countries?

I think that working from the studio or anywhere with people from different continents opens up a world of fresh ideas and styles that you just can't get locally.? Take East Asian clients and specialists, for example. Sure, wide time zone differences are a challenge for everyone, but their dedication to every task and that team-first attitude really stand out and can be positively contagious. It’s all about the community and working together in the workplace. You can feel the different perspective and it becomes a new part of you as a professional

As a Latina professional now located in Spain, I've gotten used to direct, no-nonsense communication, especially with my Nordic and Asian coworkers in the communications industry, who are pretty straight to the point at each contact. They prefer socializing at weekly events, and I’m all for after-work drinks and karaoke! Spanish and Brazilian folks usually socialize more at work, but that’s tricky with remote teams. Over the years, working with diverse styles and work ethics has helped me connect better with my local colleagues and to be more productive. Otherwise we keep the best memes for ourselves, and our coworkers from other places seem to really enjoy our closer, more personal vibe!

Excellent subject! We learn so much working with clients and colleagues from different cultures! It is a very enriching experience, especially when we start from a place of respect, understanding, tolerance, and a true desire to learn about their lives, customs, traditions, and languages.
