The Language of music as it pertains to the study of theory
Theory as it is taught in universities, colleges, music conservatories, and piano studios is basically useless except possibly the elementary areas of note reading, rhythmic values etc. I discuss such areas as figured bass and what it was originally used for but with little value today. Improvisation is a must from the first beginners lessons.
The Treble Maker
6 年As a student, what I find useless are the myriad of personally-designed graphics, jingles and gimmicks to explain music. Examples: "All cows eat grass"; what do cows eating grass have to do with music? A "circle"; what does a circle have to do with music (or, a clock face)? There are also "kinked lines, spirals, fan shapes, matrices, color-coding the piano keys, etc." The piano is already color-coded. Just one student's reaction.
