Language Learning Strategies (LLS) – Better English

Improving our language skills enhances our ability to communicate. As we use language to communicate, the better we express ourselves, the more we are heard. Research has been done on how to improve our language capabilities, but the basis remains the same. LLS has a direct impact on the level of conscious involvement in the learning process, and one of the strategies is memorizing information for the purpose of retrieving and using it in many other situations. The purpose of memorization at the initial proficiency stage is to build vocabulary. As children learn poetry, pros, and literature in schools, this has been identified as a design for vocabulary building. Hence, memorization of anything, be it songs, words, presentations, or speeches, as an adult is beneficial as it will serve as knowledge and memories for future use. When the vocabulary bank has filled the context of using the words will come automatically because you have the memory of the context. The words that were used previously are already stored in long-term memory.

Another LLS is effectively interacting using language. Foreign universities immerse students in their first semester just to learn their native language. This happens prior to the official program of the degree, as they feel language orientation for a wholesome experience is important. In the same manner, we need to use English at whatever level to interact frequently, thereby gaining confidence in our ability to speak and be understood. Motivation, attitude, emotional connection, and cultural simulation to the way English is used need to take place, and at this phase, speaking in half-and-half sentences is very acceptable.

Reflecting on learning strategies (not just LLS), we usually have a teaching strategy, experiential learning, direct instruction, indirect learning, interactive learning, and independent studying, which are the formulas teaching anything works around. For language fluency, indirect, interactive, and experiential learning are the most beneficial, especially for adults.

Let’s consider the methods of receiving information. It could be through direct, interactive, experiential direction, or independent effort. In these forms, learning is happening at a conscious and unconscious level. Therefore, it will be the learner’s determination for self-improvement which will speed up the process. If we reflect on the number of years and hours we have spent learning a subject or a profession and apply the same mindset to language learning, we will timetable learning processes into our day-to-day.

As in most things, our motivation for and the objective for improving English will determine the speed of improvement.?
