?? The Language of the Emotions ??

?? The Language of the Emotions ??

Hello my friends!

Today I share with you another lecture from the Only Human: Foundations course.

This piece follows from Monday's share on Sense-Story-Charge, which laid out the fundamentals of the inner world.

Today, we dig deeper into the emotions and their invisible influence on manifestation.

Our emotions speak silently to the world and invite certain kinds of experiences, certain relation dynamics.

When we are unconscious of these emotions, we will be stuck on a merry-go-round, experiencing similar situations on repeat.

Once we begin to engage more directly with the inner world, the world opens up and new experience is possible.

*

"Welcome to week 6: navigating the emotional space

Last week we discussed triggers and emotional processing

You learned the sense-story-charge perspective for viewing the inner human experience, and we discussed surrender, check-ins, and practices to process emotions when they come up

We discussed emotional suppression, how the emotions don’t actually go away until we process them, and how they can tend to show through the cracks or spill over when we suppress them for too long.

*

In order to step into mastery in the emotional space, we must first devote our attention to processing all of the old charge that has collected up in our field.

The tools that you learned last week are a first step to a lifestyle of feeling your feelings, showing up for yourself, and holding space to process what has arisen.

This week, we’re going to take it farther, exploring what you can do with intention in the emotional space.

But first, let’s take a closer look at the body.

*

Your body stores and reflects all the emotions in both your conscious and unconscious space.

Because of this, your body offers a key to understanding your subconscious emotions. More than that, your body is an excellent access point to release these emotions.

If you’d like to know how to work with your body in this way, tune in.

Tune in to your hands, your fingers. Are they relaxed and at ease? Constantly in motion? Clenched tightly?

Tune in to your neck and shoulders. Are they tight and locked, or open, relaxed and moving freely?

Tune in to your chest and belly. Are they tense, closed off and protected? Or open, relaxed and free?

How about your feet? Toes curled and locked in, or open and free?

*

Tension in any part of the body reflects locked emotional charge.

And, when you relax this physical tension, it actually primes the subconscious to release some of the emotional charge as well.

Often, in relaxing the body, we create space for the old emotions to come back up and move through our conscious awareness.

So your body offers both feedback to the subtleties of your emotional state and a means to connect consciously with old emotions so that they can be processed and released.

*

If you are able to cultivate awareness around your breath and body, you will move into a place of greater freedom.

You will begin tuning your mind with your breath and using the body to maintain awareness of your emotional state.

This will be an invaluable tool moving forward, as you can actually use your body to key into a desired emotional state as well.

There is a specific feeling in the body for each emotion, for anger, or sadness, or fear, or joy.

There are specific feelings in the body which accompany other inner states as well, such as calmness or confidence or compassion.

*

In any case, a relaxed body can flow and shift, which naturally leads the emotional space to flow and shift as well.

A tense body is locked in position, which leads the emotions to be locked in position as well.

If you keep tuned in to your body and breath, cue yourself to the triggers, and RELAX…

Then you get in the driver’s seat of your emotional experience.

*

Now that we’ve explored some of the links between the body and the emotions, let’s begin to explore the messages of the basic emotions themselves.

There are loads of different ways to name and describe the emotional spectrum.

I’ve encountered other coaches that like to use a wheel of emotion in order to identify the specific feeling. This is good stuff, but I like to keep things simple.

I mentioned last week that we can gain some clarity around the language of our emotions by oversimplifying them into four basics: mad, sad, glad, and afraid.

Or, in other words, anger, sadness, joy, and fear.

Our emotional experience is much more complex than that, but this gives us a strong start. Because each of these emotions says something very specific.

*

Fear tells us that we need to take action.

(Now remember, we can be triggered by old emotional charge, just as much as by current, present charge, so we sometimes get mixed signals.

So, sometimes we get fear coming up and feel as if we need to take action now, but it’s really just old stuff that’s coming up to be processed.

It takes time and consistent work to process enough old charge to tune in to clear and present emotional feedback)

Anger tells us that our boundaries have been crossed, and that we must speak up or step up to defend them.

Sadness tells us that a need is unmet.

And joy tells us that what we’re doing is working for us.

*

So, when you have an emotion come up, and if you have the space to do so, take the time to hold space for it.

Let the intensity ebb off naturally, let the thought threads settle, and then look for what that trigger is saying to you.

If you have sadness come up, once you have given yourself time and space to process it in the body, ask yourself what you need.

If you have fear come up, once you have given yourself time to process it in the body, ask yourself where you need to take action.

If you have anger come up, once you have given yourself space and time to process it in the body, ask yourself what boundary has been crossed, and how best you might honor that boundary in your interactions from here on in.

And, if you have joy come up, then pay attention.

Your deep, unfettered joy will show you what you care about and what’s working for you. It can guide you to follow your bliss to an intentional, aligned, and deeply meaningful life.

*

Now that we have touched upon some of the basic language of the emotions, let’s explore how we communicate with one another and with the world through the medium of our emotional charge.

There’s much talk of manifestation these days, and I’ll tell you right now it’s both how life works and completely unnecessary to discuss.

That’s because people often discuss manifestation like a superpower that can help people get what they consciously want.

It can be used in this way, but our conscious mind is not the wisest, clearest, or most aligned part of us.

Often, we will get exactly what we asked for and find out it wasn’t what we wanted at all.

*

A much more productive handling of manifestation is completely emotional.

If you act in fear, your results are likely to justify fear.

If you act in anger, you will often enter into conflict.

If you act in sadness and despair, your actions will often leave your needs unmet, making sadness and despair seem all the more reasonable.

Whatever emotion you hold in your field, you are speaking the language of the universe and aligning with outcomes that match that emotional vibration.

So, forget the image of what you think you want. Cultivate, instead, a present relationship with the way you would like your life to feel.

*

This is tricky to work with. You can’t authentically just make yourself feel happy when you’re sad or angry.

You might be able to fake it (a little bit) but it’s the deep-down emotions from the subconscious that are speaking loudly to the universe.

Or, to put it another way, it’s the deep subconscious emotions that prime you to perceive and relate with the world in a certain way, inviting certain kinds of experiences, certain interaction dynamics and situations.

This is why we focused first on healthy emotional processing.

Until you make a habit of feeling and processing your feelings, these practices will not work for you. Not consistently and in the way that you want.

*

There is another option. We can use a single-point focus to will certain things to happen, coercing the subconscious into the desired outcome.

But this manhandling of the subconscious is not a long-term strategy. It causes more problems than it solves.

So, for sustainable growth and the embodiment of this growth in our life, we first focus on being vigilant in our emotional space, noticing our triggers, noticing our body tension, noticing our breathing.

We learn to hold space for our feelings when they come up and breathe them through the body.

And, once we have a bit of inner space to work with, we can begin to tune in to the emotional frequency that we would like to hold in our field, and which we would like to invite into our relation with the world.

*

There are many ways to do this.

For example, you could think of a time when you felt confident, tuning in to that feeling, that situation, until it fills your inner space, and your body subtly shifts to reflect the attitude of confidence.

You could imagine yourself as a completely confident individual, imagine what it feels like to be in that space, and then merge with this confident version of yourself.

You could even key the specific emotions into an imagined symbol, a color or envisioned artifact, and use this inner symbol to tune in to the emotion and invite it into your inner space.

*

Again, I prefer simplicity.

You can directly tune in to the emotion itself, sending your antenna to that feeling, and then allowing it to enter your body and field…

…observing as this new feeling comes in, noticing all the subtle somatic and visceral qualities of the emotion so that you can navigate to that space more easily next time.

Whatever emotion you hold in your field will influence how people interact with you.

It will influence everything that happens to you, from what you perceive and how you interpret it, to chance occurrences with no logical connection to how you’re feeling.

*

And this is happening now. We’re not talking about doing something different than you do every minute of every day.

All we’re doing here is cultivating awareness around the signals that you send out (constantly, consciously or unconsciously).

Most of the time, we send out signals to the universe that get us the opposite of the results we want.

We may act out of fear in an attempt to make the fear go away. But instead, we often create situations that justify more fear.

As we become aware of our emotional space and the feelings we hold in our field, we can begin cultivating the emotions that we would like to encounter in the world.

Things like patience, ease, grace, acceptance, compassion, motivation, excitement, joy.

*

This doesn’t mean ignoring or suppressing challenging emotions when they come up. These emotions are wise messengers, and we ignore them at our own peril.

When stuff comes up, hold space for yourself and process it in the body.

In all other times, remember that you can key your emotional signature to the feeling that you would like to have in your life, and it will make all the difference.

*

Today we’ve covered a bit about the emotional language, both understanding what our emotions are saying to us, and what they are saying silently to the world.

In the next lesson we will discuss practical tools for navigating the emotional waters.

We’ll be looking closer at how to tune in to a specific emotion, and how to clear the threads of emotional connection to make way for new dynamics of interaction and experience.”
