The Language of Connection: Redefining Interactions Beyond Networking

Alexis McKenney

This blog edition invites you into a realm where a sincere smile, a firm handshake, or a heartfelt conversation wields unmatched influence—the realm of in-person personal connections emphasizing those that transpire during professional conferences. Inspired by the tapestry of human interaction observed at the 2023 American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) annual conference (ACON23), we delve into a shift in language—a move from networking to building profound professional and personal connections.

In this blog, we draw upon the lessons learned and observations made during ACON23 to emphasize the profound importance of in-person encounters. We explore how these encounters build trust and rapport, encourage communication and collaboration, foster emotional connections, and nurture professional growth and development.

Come along as we rediscover the essence of genuine connection and consider the shift that emerged in the hallways and sessions of ACON23—from networking to developing meaningful, impactful relationships.

From Networking to Connections

'Networking' typically conjures images of formal events, conferences, or business gatherings where professionals exchange business cards, discuss work, and explore potential collaborations. It often centers around career advancement, business opportunities, and industry-related discussions. The focus is primarily on advancing professional goals and expanding business contacts.

These activities are common to any professional conference, including ACON23. However, the language shift from networking to connections provides more of a holistic perspective.

When considering connections, we embrace a diverse spectrum of human relationships. These connections include professional engagements often linked with networking and the personal, emotional, and social interactions we experience. Furthermore, connections entail cultivating and nurturing friendships, savoring shared enjoyable experiences, extending support and empathy, and uncovering common ground beyond the confines of a job.

The Human Touch: A Fundamental Need

As human beings, we are inherently social creatures. We are wired to connect on a deeply personal level. Our brains interpret facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice, allowing us to convey and interpret emotions. These subtle cues are often lost in virtual communication, making in-person encounters essential for genuine understanding and empathy.

When we think of physical touch, we typically think about our personal relationships. However, there is a place for physical touch in the professional realm. You might enjoy a warm, welcoming hug with a colleague you only see once a year. A firm handshake or a reassuring pat on the back can convey support, comfort, and reassurance in ways that go beyond words.

Although the moment can be awkward for some, simple, consensual physical interactions can play a vital role in bonding, trust, and emotional well-being. In-person connections allow us to experience the full spectrum of human senses, reinforcing our shared humanity.

Building Trust and Rapport

Trust is the foundation of any meaningful connection, whether personal or professional. While digital communication can facilitate the exchange of information, it often falls short when building trust and rapport. In-person meetings enable us to gauge sincerity and authenticity more accurately. We can look into someone's eyes, assess their body language, and listen to the tone of their voice to determine if their words align with their intentions.

Effective Communication and Collaboration

In many professional settings, collaboration is the key to success. Whether you're collaborating on a project or providing leadership, the ability to communicate effectively is essential. While digital tools offer convenience and speed, they often lack the nuance and depth required for productive collaboration.

Connecting with colleagues during in-person meetings, such as those common to professional conferences, allows for spontaneous exchanges, brainstorming sessions, and creative problem-solving. The natural flow of conversation, the ability to read facial expressions, and the immediate feedback provided by in-person interactions lead to more effective communication. These exchanges foster a shared understanding and can lead to breakthroughs and agreements that are more difficult to achieve in a virtual environment.

Fostering Emotional Connections

In the realm of personal relationships, in-person connections hold immeasurable value. Whether it's spending quality time with family, bonding with friends, or nurturing romantic relationships, nothing can replace the depth and intimacy that in-person interactions provide. Shared experiences, laughter, and moments of vulnerability all contribute to the emotional richness of these connections.

In the digital age, we often find ourselves preoccupied with the online world, scrolling through social media, and engaging in superficial exchanges. While these platforms can help us stay connected to a vast network of acquaintances, they can also contribute to feelings of isolation and loneliness.

In contrast, spending time with people in person can have a therapeutic effect. Being physically present with someone allows us to express our emotions more authentically and receive support and empathy in return. In-person connections serve as a vital buffer against the isolating effects of digital technology, contributing to our overall emotional well-being.

Nurturing Personal Growth and Development

In-person personal connections also play a role in personal growth and development. They offer opportunities for self-discovery, learning, and exposure to different perspectives. Interacting with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences helps us expand our horizons and challenge our preconceptions.

In educational conference sessions, the importance of in-person connections cannot be overstated. Discussions and group and face-to-face interactions provide a holistic learning experience more than what is presented on a computer screen. The exchange of ideas, debates, and mentorship opportunities in conference spaces contribute to a well-rounded education and personal growth.

The Rise of Authenticity and Meaningful Relationships

The transition from networking to making connections signifies a cultural shift toward authenticity and meaningful relationships. In our digitally connected world, many seek genuine interactions and value authenticity over superficial interactions. The desire for deeper, more fulfilling connections has led to a richer perspective on the importance of making connections as a way to navigate our personal and professional lives.

Making connections includes sharing experiences and enjoying moments together, whether during sessions, mingling in an exhibition hall, or over a meal. These shared experiences create lasting memories and strengthen the fabric of our relationships.

Making connections aligns with our fundamental human need for belonging, understanding, and shared experiences. It acknowledges that our lives are multifaceted, and our relationships should reflect this complexity. Whether in a professional setting or personal sphere, valuing authentic connections brings fulfillment, enriches our lives, and contributes to a more compassionate and empathetic society.

In essence, making connections versus simply networking is a celebration of humanity, acknowledging that our lives are not just about work and career advancement. It's about cherishing the relationships we build, the memories we create, and the positive impact we can have on others and the world around us. As we embrace this shift, we move toward a more interconnected and compassionate society, one meaningful connection at a time.

ACON23: Connections Abound

The message of the significance of making in-person personal connections parallels what we experienced at ACON23. The conference served as a vivid reminder of the power of physical gatherings to facilitate personal and professional connections.

During ATRA, attendees came together, engaging in discussions, sharing insights, and making new connections. Sessions sparked spontaneous interactions and networking opportunities that are impossible to replicate virtually. We could feel the excitement in sessions and gatherings as attendees exchanged and debated ideas.

In addition to the valuable content Recreational Therapists provided during educational sessions, planned social spaces encouraged deeper connections than when attendees remained in conference session rooms. This combination greatly enhanced their overall conference experience, a takeaway particularly evident in the analysis of conference evaluations. When categorized, the top feedback category was specific to connections.

The ATRA conference demonstrated that, even in a rapidly evolving digital landscape, the human desire for in-person personal connections remains as strong as ever. It's a reminder that while technology can connect us across great distances, there's no substitute for the richness and depth of relationships formed in person.

Conclusion

The importance of personal connections, such as those experienced by those who attended ACON23, cannot be overstated. These interactions are fundamental to our well-being, trust-building, effective communication, and emotional connections. In both personal and professional spheres, face-to-face encounters lead to deeper understanding, more meaningful relationships, and better outcomes.

While technology can enhance our lives in many ways, it should complement rather than replace the profound connections we make when physically present with one another. In a world where we increasingly rely on digital communication, it's essential to remember the power of human connection, the nuance of face-to-face conversations, and the joy of shared experiences. Building on the success of ACON23 allows us to continue prioritizing these experiences moving forward.

Like I said at the conference, there is nothing I love more than the positive energy of a full room of recreational therapists!?Lexi does a great job of talking about all of the ways we make authentic connections - and that is something you can *feel* not just in a handshake or a hug, but in the air. Looking forward to our state conference next!
