LIMA23, Langkawi International Space Forum, Malaysia 24th - 25th May 2023.
This year LIMA23, Space agenda was included for the first time in Malaysia. Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) under the purview of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) hosted officially launched Malaysian Space Exploration 2030 blueprint and the Space Industries Strategic Plan 2030 is a commitment by the government in emphasizing the importance of space sector as a new source of economy for the country.
The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, inaugurated the Malaysian Space Industry Corporation (MASIC) at MIGHT’s Pavilion in Langkawi during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) 2023. This industry-led platform, initiated by the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT), aims to bring together local space industry players to work together towards developing the Malaysian space programme.
The launch of MASIC by the Prime Minister at LIMA 2023 signifies the government’s unwavering commitment to the space industry’s growth and development as outlined in the MSE2030 and SISP, attracting investments, promoting innovation, and positioning Malaysia as a prominent player in the global space industry towards realising the Government’s aspiration of 1% or RM10 billion contribution to the national GDP from the space sector by the year 2030.
Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) has taken a giant trajectory to develop its own space capabilities. The inaugural launched open its door to global space organisation. Representing team Scotland, I am honoured to have a deeper bilateral discussion to strengthen international cooperation in the space sector where Scotland seen as a strong strategic partner. Having met with many key partners during LIMA2023, it is proven that Malaysia is the next frontier leading Space industry for the region.
With the upcoming Kuantan Airport development, the aerospace sector was the limelight. The new Kuantan International Airport, which will be part of the Pahang Aerospace City, is expected to be operational in 2026. Speaking to Gading Group Chief Executive Officer, a man with many vision, clearly state these development will boost the economic development for Pahang.
I was also humbled to be invited and to meet with Dr. Norilmi Amilia Ismail (an alumni from University of Glasgow), Chief Executive Officer, SpaceIn Sdn Bhd during their Memorandum of Understanding signing with Prof. M Sadruddin M S, Chairman, Planters International. Alba Orbital has been a successful partner in developing the PocketQube with SpaceIn Sdn Bhd. It was a monumental successful event for all companies and for both countries involved.
