TL;DR: FDR's 1942 State of the Union speech was a watershed moment in U.S. history. Here, he articulated an American perspective on global events, linking freedom and morality to our potential involvement in the emerging conflicts in Europe.

So What? By 1942, the case of American involvement in Europe was far from settled. By spelling out his four freedoms (freedom of speech, of worship, from fear, and from want), FDR linked a deep sense of obligation and national idealism to the defense of the Allies on the eve of World War II. Nearly a year later, the attack on Pearl Harbor would lead the country into war, and his words would drive the U.S. experience for the next four years.
