Land of Sublime...

As part of Africa Month and our recommended destination for the week... we welcome you to its panoramic landscapes, sweeping savannahs, soaring peaks and spectacular sunsets making this East African nation of Tanzania, one of the most scenically beautiful safari destinations on the continent. Teeming with wildlife, it's also the geographic home of Africa's highest and most iconic mountain - Kilimanjaro. 

There's debate around where "Kili" got its name... One theory is that it's a mix of the Swahili word Kilima, meaning mountain, and the KiChagga word Njaro - loosely translated as "whiteness" and referring to its snow-capped summit. Another theory is that Kilimanjaro is the European pronunciation of a KiChagga phrase meaning "we failed to climb it"! Today, the mountain attracts climbers from across the world who come to stand on the "roof of Africa". 

Tanzania's also renowned the world over for the Serengeti National Park, part of the 30,000 square kilometre greater Serengeti eco-system that links up with neighbouring Kenya's Maasai Mara, forming the twin centres of the annual great wildebeest migration. It takes its name from the Maasai word siringet, which means "the place where the land runs on forever" which is understandable when you see the endless horizons of this incredible place.

Epic safari destinations abound in Tanzania, from the breathtaking Ngorogoro Crater with its unique eco-system contained within the soaring walls of an extinct volcano to Tarangire National Park which rivals the Serengeti with its huge numbers of animals and diversity of wildlife species.

Add to this the exotic and self-autonomous island of Zanzibar, located off Tanzania's gorgeous coastline a short distance from the capital city of Dar es Salaam and you have the perfect destination for a bush and beach adventure like no other...
