Land more interviews in today’s competitive job market!
You might be wondering why no one contacts you after you have sent in your application.
The solution might lie in how you prepare your resume.
Your resume is your professional marketing tool. It doesn’t just outline your knowledge, skills and experiences. Which might mean that it might not count to just list down things in sections.
Let’s start with your resume format.
A well-formatted resume with concise information that provides insights can help showcase you well.
Enhancing your resume – Choose a template that works for you
If recruiters are unable to find the relevant information to consider you as a potential candidate, your job search efforts would not be fruitful.
Sharing some of the common formats that are currently in use for your reference.
A simple and clean format that displays the highlights of your profile. It is important that the information does not appear too cluttered.
The format provides some creativity, if you feel the standard functional approach is too simple for you. The style helps the reader to understand easily and creates a simple appeal without overdoing it.
Have a story to tell the recruiter? How about a timeline format to arrange your information in a simple and visual way?
Applying for creative roles or exploring opportunities in creative industries? Came across this before, though you should be mindful that the style should complement the key content of your profile, rather than being distracting or fluff.
If you prefer short sections to provide overview at a glance, this format supports that level of conciseness.
For a more graphical/data visualization presentation, here is your format type. The bold modern design can help emphasize important information; it is able to represent global projects on a world map; icons highlight sections and your skills can be shown in chart formats for quick review.
The ranking may not work in some cases given the lack of benchmarks to help the reader make sense of what the author is trying to present, so do think through first before using.
Happy to hear your story about how a particular format works better for you, as well as your success story of how your resume supported you in securing job interviews! Will be following up with more resume writing tips. Meanwhile, stay tuned!

5 年Useful piece Mike! Thanks!

5 年I had a creative resume which worked nicely for me. However, I see that now you need to pass the ATS (Application Tracking System) and many won’t be able to read columns, graphs, pictures, and those done in InDesign or Illustrator. My new resume (ATS compliant) looks dull and simple, as if I made no effort to make it visually attractive. Where should we draw the line?
