EXCUSE THE MESS WHILE WE ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Lafayette's Mardi Gras history began in February 14th, 1869, and included a local musical group called the Clement's band. It was a small celebration performed at the courthouse. and evolved into a citywide festival by 1897 with both a parade, ball, and the crowning of their first royalty. King Attakapas, Judge George Armand "Bedon" Martin, who arrived at the festivities on a Southern Pacific train, a tradition that continued until 1961 was names the cities first king, and?Isaure McDaniel was the first queen of Lafayette's Mardi Gras.?
By 1934, the city officially renamed their royalty King Gabriel and Queen Evangeline, symbolizing the Acadian sweethearts from the Longfellow poem "Evangeline". As the decade passed into the 1940s the world had become a dark place and Mardi Gras celebrations were suspended by 1942 for the next six years due to World War II.?However, by 1949, the Krewe of Gabriel was formed to help the city regrouped and find the spirit of Mardi Gras again.
By the 1950s Lafayette Creoles were able to have a much more active role in the creation of Mardi Gras in Lafayette and introduced their original style of costume-making. More inclusion followed by the Mardi Gras Indian Walking Parade at Pontiac Point and is a staple of Black Carnival, inspiring unity within the community.?
Today, Lafayette and all of Acadiana celebrates a unique style of Mardi Gras called Courir de Mardi Gras or "Run of Fat Tuesday", with a variety of traditional activities, including balls and parades.
