Lady Southern Cross Search Expedition II
Two miles off the Coast of Myanmar (Burma), I am starting to really dislike the drive to work everyday. On the bright side, at this time of morning there is not much traffic.
The aircraft Known as the "Lady Southern Cross" flown by Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and co-pilot John Thompson "Tommy" Pethybridge vanished on November 8, 1935. Last sighted by air traffic control in Yangon (Formerly Rangoon) en route to Singapore. The airmen failed to arrive the following morning and were never to be seen or heard from again. Despite a concerted effort to find them their fate and whereabouts for over 80 years had remained unknown.
Their disappearance began the oldest aviation mystery in history, a truly remarkable story and a tragic yet truly honourable end to the life of the greatest aviator to have ever flown. The memory of these men and their achievements have slowly been lost to time, but not to all and not to those who still care.
To the members of the Joint Myanmar Australian Lady Southern Cross Search Expedition II team, past and present, the Government of the Union of Myanmar, the people of Myanmar, the families of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, Tommy Pethybridge, Ted Wixted, Jack Hodder, and all those who have supported this project and been a part this history over the past 80 years, thank you.
