Lady Liberty's Day
It was on this day in 1886 that President Grover Cleveland dedicated the Statue of Liberty. Designed by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, it was, remarkably, a gift from France to the United States.
The dedication of the?State of Liberty is a good event to remember with your students. They might enjoy this short but lovely and insightful?podcast?from the American Story Podcast. It is just a few minutes long but gives us a fairly substantive glimpse into the vision that Bartholdi's work provides.
For the 12+ million immigrants who entered their new home by way of nearby Ellis Island between 1891 and 1924, Lady Liberty was the grand herald of the second chances they sought, a preeminent symbol of America as a land of hope.??She remains so for anyone with a mind for what is enduring.
Liberty and hope are symbiotically related and require a spirit even stronger than the iron, steel, and copper out of which the Statue of Liberty is constructed.?
Teach your students to remember what endures. Their freedom depends on it.
Thank you for reminding us of the light that the United States has been to the world for over 2 centuries.
