Gaining years of experience is not as essential as it used to be. You do not necessarily grow by following your senior around the office for 8 hours a day. There are many ways to learn and gain skills faster. Getting connected to things outside the office walls can help you gain exposure. And exposure can be as equally beneficial as experience too.
As someone who used to work in a Japanese company, I can say that gaining years of experience was once considered the most crucial factor for career advancement. The Japanese value seniority more than anything when it comes to work. But times have changed, and the way we learn and develop our skills has evolved as well.
We no longer have to spend endless hours following our seniors just to learn. We can now explore new opportunities and gain exposure to various industries, cultures, and perspectives. All we need to do now is join online courses, seek mentorships, attend networking events, and even follow the right people on social media.
Moreover, gaining exposure outside the office walls can be just as beneficial as gaining work experience. By connecting with people and things beyond our immediate work environment, we broaden our horizons, develop critical thinking skills, and gain insights into how others operate.
In today's fast-paced world, we need to constantly adapt to new challenges. While experience is undoubtedly valuable, it is no longer the only factor that contributes to our success. So let's open our minds and seek out new opportunities to learn and grow beyond what our offices can offer.
