The price of soybean oil in China reached its highest point in nearly a decade in 2022, and the average annual price of feed primary soybean oil remained at 10,788 CNY/ton, up 12.98% from the same period in 2021. Compared with 2022, the price of soybean oil in 2023 is slightly lower than that of last year, but there is a recent upward trend (see Figure 1). In August, the average monthly price of soybean oil in China was 8,684 CNY/ton, up 4.17% from the previous month, and now domestic supply and demand are tight. Similarly, the prices of corn (see Figure 3) and soybean meal (see Figure 4) have also shown a continuous upward trend, especially the soybean meal has risen to 5,200 CNY/ton.
A feed mill with a monthly output of 7,000 tons in Shandong Province has raised the prices of broiler compound feed six times since 2023, and the price is above 4.15 CNY /kg. The average breeding cost in the second quarter was about 9 CNY/kg, and the profit per chicken was 1-1.5 CNY, which was higher than the average breeding cost and lower than the average profit last year. Since the second quarter, the chicken price in Shandong Province has been falling for 10 weeks, reaching the lowest price in the year, the average chicken market price is 18.21 CNY /kg, 7% lower than the high of the year, and the average loss of 1 CNY for each chicken slaughtered by slaughterhouses.
In broiler compound feed, although the amount of soybean oil added is not as good as corn, soybean meal, etc., the high price of oil has brought great pressure on the feed cost of feed mills. Therefore, as the raw material market is in line with international standards, the feed industry will certainly usher in a high-cost era in the next five years. We cannot determine the price of the oil, but we can ease the cost of the formula by adding suitable feed additives to improve the utilization of the oil. The feed additive bile acid of Lachance Group can effectively reduce the feed cost by 10-20 CNY/ton by increasing the utilization rate of oil by 15-20%.
1. The main functions of bile acids:
1.1 Enhance digestion and absorption of energy-rich feed ingredients, including fats, oils, and fat-soluble nutrients in poultry feed;
1.2 Protect liver and gallbladder, main poultry health.
2. The action mechanism of bile acid promoting fat digestion and absorption:
2.1 Promote fat emulsification
The bile acid molecule contains both a hydrophilic hydroxyl group and carboxyl group, as well as hydrophobic alkyl group, so that the bile acid has strong surface activity, can reduce the surface tension between oil and water, promote the emulsification of fat, and form chylomicrons that can be suspended in water, expand the contact area of fat and lipase, and prepare for the fat to be fully digested.
In fat digestion, pancreatic lipase can only hydrolyze the lipids in the food emulsified by bile acids, so the emulsification of bile acids cannot be replaced by other substances.
2.2 Activate lipase and enhance the activity of lipase
Lipase secreted by the pancreas is transformed into active lipase in the small intestine to play a role, and its activation must be involved in bile acids, and bile acids can make lipase bind to the surface of triglyceride fat droplets and play a catalytic role.
The suitable PH value for lipase
activity is 8-9, but the PH value in the intestine is only 6-7, in this condition, lipase doesn’t work fully. The lipase can be activated by bile acids when they combine together. Bile acids can open the cap of lipase and release the catalyzed elements, in the meantime, the structure of lipase is also changed which can let fat droplets come into contact with catalyze in order to hydrolyze into fatty acids, glycerine, and monoglyceride.
2.3 Transport fatty acids
In the process of fat absorption, small intestinal epithelial cells have a specific recognition system. Only fatty acids and bile acids combine to form a complex that can be recognized by small intestinal epithelial cells so that the fatty acid-bile acid complex enters the small intestinal chorionic membrane to complete the fat absorption process.
Here are two cases of how to reduce feed costs by using bile acids:
Case 1.
In the optimized formula, the amount of oil was reduced by 0.6%, and the bile acid (30%) was added by 0.02%. The cost of the optimized formula was reduced by 21 CNY/ton compared with the original formula. Although the optimized formula reduced the amount of oil and metabolized energy by 20Kcal/kg compared with the original formula, the growth performance of broilers did not decrease but increased, the survival rate increased by 0.3%, the FCR decreased by 0.02, and the European index also increased by 15.
Case 2.
This case was just completed in August this year in Bangladesh.

2. Treatments
(1) Control group
(2) Experimental group 1
- Dosage:200g/t bile acids
- Reduced by 44Kcal ME
- Replaced emulsifiers
(3) Experimental group 2
- Dosage: 200g/t bile acids
- Reduced by 44Kcal ME
- Replaced emulsifiers
- Increased cheaper non-conventional feed ingredients, rice polish.
3. Results and conclusion
Conclusion: After adding 200g/t bile acid, the feed cost was reduced by 300 Bangladeshi Taka, which had no negative effect on the production performance, but increased the average daily gain and survival rate.
In short, bile acids can improve the digestion and absorption of oil, improve the production performance of broilers, reduce feed costs, and enhance market competitiveness, which is an effective means for commercial broiler feed to participate in market competition.
Measures to reduce feed cost of broilers by adding bile acids:
- Replace 3-5kg oil and 30-50Kcal metabolizable energy in the formulation;
- Increase the use of unconventional feed ingredients to replace some soybean meal;
- 100% emulsifiers removed;
- 100% liver tonic removed;
- 50% mycotoxin adsorbent removed;
- 5%-10% fat-soluble vitamins and pigments removed.
