We are less than two months from #COP28 in #Dubai, but way less attention is given to the regional climate weeks, a moment where regional actors can discuss their challenges, connect, and build momentum ahead of COP28 when there will be the conclusion of the first global stocktake, designed to chart the way for fulfilling the Paris Agreement's key goals. From 23-27 October, Panama will host the LAC Climate Week 2023, focused on climate solutions ahead of COP28. The Weeks consider four major systems-based tracks?with a view to providing region-focused contributions to inform the global stocktake:
I will be there with my colleagues Christian Daube and Fabio S D. , presenting, among other things, the CATAL1.5°T initiative, including the launch of 11 CATAL1.5°T Climathons in 7 countries in the region (#Argentina,?#Colombia,?#Peru, #CostaRica,?#ElSalvador,?#Honduras, and?#Mexico. You can register through this link: https://climathon.climate-kic.org/catalist/?
The program is funded by?Green Climate Fund and the?Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and it's globally implemented by?Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH,?Tecnológico de Monterrey and EIT?Climate-KIC.?
Let me know if you are around, we are planning a happy hour for organizations working with climate innovation and entrepreneurship!
CLIMATE NEWS AND REPORTS
Circularity Gap Report LAC
The Circularity Gap Report (CGR) Latin America and the Caribbean demonstrates how the region can leverage the circular economy to tackle systemic inefficiencies in satisfying societal needs, conserve its unique natural wealth and improve its people’s well-being. (via Adriana Zacarias Farah )
?? Key findings:
?LAC supplies over 11% of global raw materials despite representing only 8.3% of the world's population.
?Shockingly, the circularity rate is just 1%, signifying minimal recycling and reusing efforts in LAC countries.
The Circularity Gap Report LAC highlights that shifting to a circular economy could slash material use and carbon footprint by 30%, creating over 8.8 million new formal jobs.
The report further emphasizes that to unlock its full potential, the transition to a circular economy must be just and inclusive, ensuring that everyone benefits.
The Circularity Gap Report LAC was commissioned by #GO4SDGS, UN Environment Programme, Inter-American Development Bank, IDB Invest, ECLAC, UNIDO and authored by the Circle Economy Foundation

Strong influence of climate change in uncharacteristic early spring heat in South America
Large parts of South America suffered from extremely high temperatures for an extended period of time, reaching above 40oC in central and Northern Brazil during mid-September, despite it being the spring season.?
The early and prolonged heat affected millions of people across Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia. Across the heat-affected countries, large wildfires are raging. At least 36 fires have been detected in Bolivia (País ED, 2023), 20 in Paraguay (ABC, 2023), and several more throughout Brazil, including in Bahia (The San Diego Union Tribune, 2023; CNN, 2023), Pantanal (O Globo, 2023), and the Amazon (France24, 2023).?Using published peer-reviewed methods, scientists from Brazil, Argentina, the Netherlands, United States of America and the United Kingdom, collaborated to assess to what extent human-induced climate change altered the likelihood and intensity of 10-day maximum temperatures during the months August- September in the region most affected by the extreme heat (fig 1).?
In this post on Instagram, Raquel Luna Viggiani and Zahyra Garrido share their own witness to the extreme drought that the Amazon is currently facing.
