Labour Solidarity with our Heroes from the Health System!
It goes without saying, that not all professions are equally affected by the current health crisis. But this does not exclude a solidarity duty of "equal" labor…
On one hand, we have professionals for which the level of work is raising exponentially during this Covid-19 crisis (sometimes, side by side with the level of risks taken), and who need to perform their duties on-site. Naturally, the best example of this unavoidable on-site overwork is offered by all the health system professionals that fight like hell, at the forefront of this battle, to save lives (these are our Heroes!).
On the other hand, we have professionals that are being sent home, irrespective of whether their activities might continue to be performed remotely or not.
For those sent home and that cannot continue to perform their activities remotely, like for instance professionals working in the tourism or retail sectors, unfortunately quarantining gets closer to “sick leave”. Notwithstanding, if these professionals are healthy, apart from taking care of those who need, it is highly recommended that they take advantage of this period to develop their capacities, namely by researching, reading or taking a free online course.
For those belonging to the most digitally impacted sectors – like Information and Communications Technology, Professional Services, Media, Financial Services… – as well as for those developing support functions activities (like Legal, Marketing and Accounting departments), if they are healthy, working remotely should not be a reason to not increase their productivity, since, apart from taking care of those who need, including kids at home, a lot of body-logistics and distractions (like office-soft-talk) are reduced when working remotely.
Naturally, there is a lot of exceptions, uncertainties, and nuances for these digitally-enabled sectors and correspondent activities, but I believe that you will understand my message (wish): Instead of "paralyzing", let’s all show solidarity with those that are involved in body-related activities and that are currently in pain! Unsurprisingly, my idea is that this solidarity should be expressed not only by a more than deserved applause but especially through an increase in productivity by those who are lucky enough to continue to work from home! Naturally, I am not saying that people are not doing their best when working from home today – be it far from me! I am just appealing to an extra-mile in order to express harmony with the heroes that are doing a double-extra-mile far away from the comfort and (presumed) safety of their homes. I am sure that most of you will agree that this extra-contribution (both to our companies and to our society), which also prevents us from being mere spectators, would represent our fair share to partially counterbalance a completely unfair situation.
… And, by the way, those who can/know should use this crisis to go beyond just preaching digital transformation and really foster an increasingly digital world! Everyone will be grateful for this progression, once this virus gives us a truce!
Today is Monday. What a great day to start to be supportive!
