Labour Challenges Remain

The much-talked-about labour shortages of the past couple of years are still with us. Maybe they’re not being talked about so much in the mainstream media, but it’s still really hard to attract and retain staff, particularly to carry out repetitive tasks inside the four walls of a warehouse.

Even in Germany, where the industry is heavily automated, businesses are paying higher-than-ever rates to get people in. Talking to German experts in the field at LogiMAT and at the recent Test Camp Intralogistics, they believe the answer lies in automation – to eliminate the physical tasks – and in AI, the latter to help optimise processes and reduce the overall need for labour.

The question of robots replacing humans is a moot one. The reality is, there are not enough humans to be replaced in the first place, so robots are merely filling in the gaps.?
