LABOR DAY AND THE NEW SOCIAL CONTRACT
It's about more than deep discounts on mattresses and furniture, or one last trip to the beach before Fall.
In the late nineteenth century, labor activists in the U.S. pushed for a Federal holiday to recognize workers’ many contributions to America's strength, prosperity, and well-being. As a result, Congress passed an act in June 1894, making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday: Labor Day.?
On this holiday—now 130 years in the making—we celebrate the American workers’ social and economic achievements.??
American labor has raised the nation's standard of living and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever known. The labor movement has brought us closer to realizing our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy.?
Therefore, it's more than appropriate that the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creators of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership: the American worker.
I believe the American workforce remains the fuel for creating and preserving value in America and the critical driver of individual happiness and fulfillment.?
But a lot has changed in the past 130 years (or even just the past thirty years):?
·?????? the nature of work
·?????? who extracts value for an individual's work
·?????? endless innovations
·?????? democratization of education
·?????? availability of capital
·?????? the rise of digital platforms

All these changes have resulted in the barriers to entry for entrepreneurs never being lower.????
But even as we celebrate the strength of the American workforce, we must candidly admit the weakness of the current social contract.
The social contract—as most perceive it to still be in America—was designed for work in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Unfortunately, it's no longer adequately supporting the well-being and financial opportunities, or fairness, for the American worker.
While corporations play a crucial role in the economy, the "Corporatization" of America has resulted in the imbalance of the allocation of value creation for the everyday American worker.? If left unchecked, this corporatization can lead to various economic and social challenges that need to be addressed, including political influence, job insecurity, economic inequality, and monopoly power.???
