Labels-What You Need to Know
At first, you might see labels as simple packaging products. They adhere to your envelopes and mailing boxes, your bottled products, or your new folding carton packaging. You want them to stick, look nice, and provide information. How complicated could it be??
There is actually much more to labels than this. Labels can be quite sophisticated. While we tend to focus on what they look like, it’s also important to think about them in terms of their function.?
Here are 10 things you should consider when asking for a label.
1. Function.?How will the label be used? Will it be used for marketing? Branding? Logistics and tracking??
2. Base substrate.?What will the label be adhered to? Paper? Folding carton? Plastic? Glass bottle??
3. Printed substrate. What printed substrate will you be using? Paper? Plastic? Film??
4. Environmental conditions.?What are the environmental conditions under which the label will be used???Will it be going through the mail stream? Sitting on a retail shelf? Will it be exposed to heat or moisture??
5. Food contact.?Will the label come into contact with food??

6. Adherence. Will the label be permanently applied? Or is it designed to peel away??
7. Physical structure.?Will the label be a simple shape, such as a rectangle or an oval? Or will it have structure, such as foldout labels or accordion labels used in the pharmaceutical industry? Will it need a peel-away layer to expose additional product information or coupons underneath??
8. Special finishes.?Will the label need a special finish such as embossing? Foil stamping? Matte lamination or Specialty coatings??
9. Brand consistency.?Will you be using the same graphics and logos across channels? Will brand colors or brand presentation need to be consistent across multiple channels and what is necessary to ensure that the label falls within those criteria??
10. Run length and personalization.?Just like any other printed product, labels can be produced in very short runs and even be personalized. This not only opens the door to serialized barcodes and other tracking mechanisms, but highly targeted packaging and even customized products.?
