Labels Don't Define Us
In a world that connects us like never before with social media, we find that any issue that makes someone uncomfortable only because they have fear of change, puts a label on it to make it sound bad. By that I mean we are either on the left or the right, a conservative, a socialist, etc. The only good that can come from change is being kind to all in humanity regardless of race, religion, who you love, handicapped, etc.
What I feel should define us is that we treat each other with equal respect and learn to find ways to help each other have as normal a life as possible. In many ways capitalism is only as good as the people that treat it fairly and learn how to share the success with their piers. What gets in the way of this thought process is what I call a disease just like alcoholism and it’s called greed and power. These are the main factors for the wars we get into and for the unequal injustices we deal with every day. Until we can change this mindset, we will continue to have unrest in the world.
What is more alarming is the fact that while we are distracted from the more serious issues of climate change, we choose to ignore the signs and will one day realize it’s too late to reverse it. What a sad legacy we will leave future generations before mankind no longer exists. And for those that don’t believe we are dealing with climate change, they need to open their eyes to what is going on around the world right now with historical forest fires, more tropical storms and more drought than we have seen in decades.
Another proof of this is when most of the planet was staying home in quarantine and there was hardly anyone driving on the roads, the ozone layer above was actually improving itself. If that is not a sign that we can reverse this now rather than later, then I don’t know what is.
Politics has become something for grown up kids to fight over each other to prove they are right about issues they really have no true knowledge of to begin with. And when did it become a case to run for public office only to listen to special interest groups over the masses that elected them in the first place? If a politician is going to vote on an issue/amendment, maybe it’s time to have a vote by the people on whether the majority of their constituents agree with the amendment to begin with. That is true democracy. More importantly, there should be a law against tacking on some other pork barrel to an amendment that has nothing to do with the amendment being voted on to begin with. That is NOT a democracy.
We need real change in our government that actually represents the people of this great Nation and not just the rich and special interest groups. And this is not a view from the left, right or any other, it’s simply the right thing to do. Labels don’t define us, they divide us.
