RNIB PenFriend

The RNIB PenFriend 3 audio labeller enables users to record their own audio labels for a wide range of items in and around the home, at school and work.

It's easy to use and means people with sight impairment can label groceries, CDs and DVDs, clothing, make-up, and much more. When needing to identify the item, simply place the PenFriend on to the label and it will play back the recording. It can also be used as an MP3 music player and Talking Book player.

The label can be as straightforward as a description – 'orange jumper', 'mushroom soup', ' simvastatin, 10mg' – or include extra information, such as washing or cooking instructions, or when and how to take medication.

Instructions on how to get started with your PenFriend are built into the packaging and are announced in an English female voice; simply switch on the device and touch one of the tactile instruction hot-spots on the packaging.

The RNIB PenFriend stores up to 500 hours of recordings, and extra labels can be purchased, including laundry labels, magnetic labels and re-usable water-resistant labels (ideal for bottles of squash, for example) to get the most out of this popular product. Labels can also be re-recorded whenever you like.
